  The first thing we need to do before we start building our sprite engine for our games is de-fine what a sprite is. Unfortunately the direct manipulation of 2D image data in Java isn't very straight-forward. Neither is the mechanism by which we will bind that we will use to bind the image data from Java to OpenGL. Java has many methods for loading images into various Java objects, but the easiest one for us to deal with is a BufferedImage as it provides us with most of the functionality we need for loading files transparently, getting color model information about images, and getting metadata about images that we have loaded. This BufferedImage now contains all of the image data in a rectan-gular format in Java. In the next step we convert this image data from its Java form into something that OpenGL will be able to ingest. Finally, we need to convert the image data from the Java format into the OpenGL format so OpenGL has a handle on the pixel array and can draw the texture.
