Quarto is a game reminiscent of tic-tac-toe. The game begins with an empty board and all sixteen pieces available. My goal was to write an implementation of the game and an autonomous program for a human player to compete against. If the program were to perform the search on the first move of the game, the sixteen available pieces and sixteen empty squares would combine to produce a (16!)^2 search space. Eliminating the moves that take place after a game has already been won reduces that number, but a single processor would still not be sufficient to perform such a task in a reasonable amount of time. I chose to use JXTA as the underlying framework for the game based on my strong familiarity with Java and related technologies from Sun Microsystems. The logic takes the form of a Java class, implementing java.lang.Runnable and java.lang.Serializable, compiled into standard byte code. The RemoteThread class mimics the java.lang.Thread API familiar to Java developers. When the

In addition, digital games are very popular, and branded content is an important aspect of North American consumer culture. Many have suggested that the popularity of games combined with product branding could be an important revenue source for mobile service providers, and help pay for the necessary network and handset technology required for next generation mobiles. The North American content driven approach could also have significant benefits for mobile game developers. www.qualcomm.com Considering the UK's strength in the games industry and t mobile games in particular, this could make the North American market ideal for UK developers. In order to address all of these aspects of the North American Market, TIGA (The Independent Game Developers Trade Association) drew from the membership of its Mobile Special Interest Group along with Sarah Turner, the International Technology Promoter North America of Pera, and myself, at the University of Abertay Dundee.   The 12-member steering committee for HSU's New Student Orientation is led this year by students Allison Carter and Ben Johnson. The theme is "Get in the Game," and Allison and Ben said, "We want the new freshmen and transfers to feel comfortable when they start classes in that they know some familiar faces, know where they are going, and that they can feel at home like we do." New Student Orientation offers each of us a great opportunity to meet our new students. As you see students on campus this week, please remember to welcome them to their new home on the Forty Acres. There are many ways faculty and staff can pitch in and help with specific events during orientation. For more information on how you can help, contact Camellia Childress at 670-1250.
