2004: An Architecture for Distributed Simulation Games

In this paper we present an architecture for internet-mediated simulation games. The services, which span the architecture, consist of an embedded simulator, communication using messages, scenario design and control, content management, human and simulated players, and game administration. One of its related fields is gaming, in which the tools are called simulation games. When we consider simulation games, there are three "U"'s that are important: the usefulness of the tools and methods, for example the value that they add to the goal of a simulation game. This could make it possible for game designers to design and deploy games more easily using the generic services below the representation layer. The scenario service supports extended games, and complexity by automating a lot of activities a game admin-istrator usually has to manage. A separate section of the cms is used for each game, as each game has a different story-line and role descriptions. Persistency of the game

As handheld devices offering president of software for RIM. `And Java technology provides the inter-net standard for wireless industry adoption. Most of the wireless community knows that Java technology will play a key enabling role in the dev-elopment of the new applications and services that will be made pos-sible with the arrival of 3G net-works. Or that a Java variant is at the heart of three software platforms - Symbian, Windows CE and MExE - some or all of which will become the de facto applications environments for 3G networks. So what is the problem that Java technology sets out to solve in the wireless applications environment? It specifies the tasks the Java virtual machine has to perform and the core Java language features required. And by being under local control, real time games such as Tetris and 3D Maze become pos-sible, as well as dynamic re-map-ping of keys for more sophisticated gaming functions. So when will Java technology begin to impact the
Johnny Dynamite is the latest Java game for mobile phones that gives us the "pick-up and play" experience that's ideal for people on the move with a few minutes to kill. Available for download from the Johnny Dynamite wapsite, www.twofivesix.com/JD, the game costs £2.49 for unlimited play on Nokia 7650, 7210 and 3510i. Java games are ideal for today's colour phones, as users can browse, purchase and play these games from their mobile, giving them a totally mobile experience. The market for these games is set to explode with analysts predicting the market will be worth €3 billion in 2005 (Analysys). "Bango.net offers games developers like us a better revenue deal than going to the operators directly and without the hassle of integrating with each one in turn," said Ian James, CEO of twofivesix.com. "Even though many of the current handsets have strict limitations such as a 64k download limit and restrictive keypad input, twofivesix believes that game players can still

Java Tick 5 Look for a Java library class that can be used to include the time of day with each user interaction recorded in this log file. Java Tick 6 Beware - developing this kind of adventure game can be addictive! Spend just enough time at each development step that you learn the Java point being made, but don't spend too much time creating elaborate game scenarios with large amounts of text. Using either the original, or your own scenario if you prefer, refactor and extend the functionality of the game (exercises 7.5 - 7.18, then 7.20 - 7.26). Modify your game so that it can be executed from the command line without using BlueJ (exercises 7.45 and 7.46). Java Tick 7

"Calling Yuki is a landmark game for Microforum, combining features such as a very innovative game plot, Manga graphics and true 3D-isometric game play to create a unique game for the undervalued market target of girls. With "Calling Yuki™" Microforum launches the first episode of a series of Yuki games targeted at the younger female audience. The story line and the game plot make Calling Yuki a truly enticing and addictive concept. And it is truly unique as the players enter into a world where the mobile phone becomes part of the game play. You can go forward in the game using the mobile phone keypad for making virtual calls, sending virtual SMS messages or storing numbers in the game's address book. The game starts when Yuki enters Oniric County, the fantastic world in which Roy has disappeared. The game is played in a 3D-isometric world with "Manga style" graphics. The product range is both consumer and professional, with a portfolio of high quality Java games and a set

They have plenty of tangential reasons to avoid Ybos: aD is in the middle of a monu-mentally messy lawsuit, Tcl isn't Java, and budget constraints make non-profits as a group notoriously convervative in information technology (IT) decisions. Even in the best of times, few IT managers want to choose a language other than Java or a handful of approved legacy selections. Tcl, for instance, gives him produc-tivity beyond what Java can achieve in his situation. Java's heaviest costs in his Web applications are that it's strongly typed; needs to be compiled AND interpreted; and database interactions can be painful. Making data type distinctions, as Java forces you to do, just slows down development and adds frustration. much easier to add simple data type checking when it really matters in a script-ing language, than to incur the ongoing cost of string manipulation in Java, says

From its start in 1987 (Paris), the ECOOP series of conferences has proved to be the European conference that is the obvious choice for presentation of new ideas, discussing even newer ideas and present tutorials on state-of-the-art technologies. They will not be with us this time, but the conference will have an exhibition in memory these two pioneers, in addition to Edsger W. Dijkstra. In particular, we show that the compatibility checking of interfaces amounts to solving a game in which the interfaces and the unknown environment represent players. In particular, we briefly describe a new piece of Eclipse infrastructure designed to help implement various kinds of context-sensitive and context-insensitive type and pointer analyses for Java. However, simple static-typing disciplines for object-oriented languages like C++ and Java are so restrictive that programmers are forced to bypass the type system with type casts. The tutorial will introduce the .NET technology and

Java is already in more than 150 million mobile phones? There are more than 200 J2ME device models from 27 manufacturers? Over 20 million new J2ME devices are sold every month! Globally, over 10 million Java application downloads take place every month. You can develop, install, buy and sell applications to mobile phones? And that it is easier as than you think!! Have you already tried? Specifies the basic Java platform for mobile phones, two-way messaging devices, and low-end PDA devices. Answer: just check some the games; there are even versions of Mandelbrot

GRAVEL Seed Grant Proposal

This is a proposal to investigate emotional modelling in games. We propose to do a literature search, make a set of emotion-handling classes, and evaluate interfaces for a game with "believable agent" non-player characters (NPCs) with simulated emotional responses. We intend to investigate three interface technologies: a completely text-based system, a Java/Java 3D based system, and a system based on Unreal scripts. The overall goal of this grant is to start a program, through GRAVEL, on emotional modelling in computer games, which we believe to be an interesting and relevant area. Yet somehow, this game, which does everything wrong, is the most successful video game ever. We will probably start with a text-based system, written in Java, with a parser like the old Infocom-style games. Unreal is a product of Epic Games, and is a series of first-person-shooter games set in elaborate 3D worlds. If we use a Java interface without 3D, we will probably be able to put the game onto

I'll discuss Java's suitability for games programming in terms of the typical misconceptions/complaints wheeled out by people who think that games must be implemented in C, or C++, or assembler, or whatever (so long as its not Java). Java is too slow for games programming; Java has memory leaks; Java is too high-level; Java isn't supported on games consoles, so why bother using it; No one uses Java to write real games; Sun Microsystems isn't interested in supporting Java gaming. Java games requiring these types of devices can utilize JNI, the Java Native Interface, to link to C or C++ and so to the hardware. Freeware/Shareware Games There are many, many Java games out on the Web, but finding a game that's well written requires a careful search. Sun started showing an interest in gaming back in 2001, with its announcement of the Java Game Profile, a collaboration with several other companies, including Sega and Sony, to develop a Java gaming API. In 2003, the Game

Java-without-BlueJ

  - A BlueJ project is stored in a directory on disk. - A BlueJ package is stored in several different files. - BlueJ uses standard Java format for some files and adds some additional files with extra information. - source files: *.java Java source files contain the source code in readable form, as typed in by the programmer. Java class files contain byte code (a machine readable version of the class). - compilation and execution of Java in JDK are done from a command line - The answer: The java system always executes a method called main with a certain signature: - For example you might want to be able to run the program as follows: java UGLab 200 meaning run it for 200 timeticks

In this chapter, we will study an existing implementation for a very primitive text-based game. CommandWord → defines the valid command of the game. Game → the intelligence that makes the game running. The game works fine, so that's not a good criterion. Our goal is now to make an important extension to our game. Within Room (obviously, as every room stores the rooms to which it is connected by any of the possible directions), But also within Game to let the player move to any of the next rooms, and to print out the information about the possible directions within a room. Due to the existing strong coupling, it is obvious that the code in Game needs some changes too. We can illustrate this problem when adding the command to our game. The game is purely text-based, there is no need to render the game graphically.

The mobile field is now telecom's main area of innovation, as the dazzling range of clever ideas at the trade show demonstrates At the big mobile communications show in Cannes, France, in mid-February, the big focus was on third-generation (3G) networks and phones, with a particular emphasis on downloadable and But that wasn't the only news. Mobile gaming One of the hottest categories of software applications for mobile phones is downloadable games, most of which use Java technology. One of the leaders in the $1.3 billion market is In-Fusio, based in Bordeaux, France, which used 3GSM to highlight its dozens of titles, including new games such as Rambo and Tomb Raider 2. In addition to games, In-Fusio also offers a service to mobile operators that lets them outsource management of their gaming areas. Arch-rival Digital Bridges, based in London, also sells dozens of titles and struck a partnership earlier this year with American video-game giant Electronic Arts (ERTS
