Java is a complex language which is constantly being updated and extended. As such, HP has provided a complete curriculum which can cater for entrants of all abilities from novice programmer to experienced C++ developer. The Java Primer is aimed at technical managers, project managers and novice programmers and will provide an overview of Java concepts and the Java language. The entry-level Java courses for programmers and non-programmers are provided in classroom and online e-learning formats. This level of Java course will ensure that you obtain a solid knowledge of the Java language and can develop Java applications and applets in line with the Sun Certified Java 2 Developer Exam. The more advanced Java courses are designed to teach the extensions to core Java programming.   This paper provides the JavaScript code for asking questions in web-based learning materials. Re-usable examples of code for HTML 3 and JavaScript are provided. This paper suggests that teachers can add these two features to their on-line materials by integrating JavaScript questions. Mansfield applied the same principle to JavaScript when it became available along with Netscape Navigator 3.0 Gold towards the end of 1996. Our first example piece of JavaScript code provides authors of open learning materials on the web a method of setting single questions to their learners. As you can probably see in the body of the JavaScript code two further files are called. This requires two html files with JavaScript code in each one. The opportunity to use JavaScript in the authoring of an on-line package of learning materials occured in July 1997. Further, the employment of the JavaScript routines for formative self-assessment by the learner would mean that processing time would be

Standard turnaround time for Banners is 2 business days for non-Rich Media and 5 business days for Rich Media. More may be required for testing of new media formats. ALL Rich Media must include a target=blank command that will launch a new browser; this is especially important for any file with JavaScript language. HTML banners must be constructed to work within these tags. ii. HTML banners may either call to the client's server for component images or the component images may be submitted along with the HTML code directly to Primedia Business. All component images must observe file size restriction and total combined file size of component images should not exceed maximum specified file sizes for the appropriate banner size. iii. In order for DART to track clicks on HTML banner with a `form action' field (such as pull down menus, or typed search entry banners) you MUST use the form method=get and NOT form method=post. ALL Rich Media must include a target=blank command

We present a system to generate JavaScript programs for user input validation and automatic computation on HTML documents from completely declarative descriptions. input is an HTML document with validation conditions and constraints, and its output is an HTML document with a JavaScript program for validation and constraint satisfac-tion. Its input is an HTML document with validation conditions and constraints among user input, and its output is an HTML document with a JavaScript[5] program for validation and constraint satisfaction. Generated JavaScript functions are put into both the head element and the body element. Table 1 compares the number of lines of three HTML doc-uments: the HTML document of Fig.3, an HTML docu-ment generated from the HTML document of Fig.3 and an HTML document which has a handmade JavaScript pro-gram for the simple order form. A point in common between PowerForms and our system is that they generate JavaScript programs from declarative
Geology, Univ of Illinois, 1301 W Green St, Urbana, IL 61801, bannistr@uiuc.edu Fry strain analysis is a method for determining distortion of rock based on distances between grain centers and is most effective using computerized analysis of digital photomicrographs of thin sections. Simple JavaScript programs can automate image-preparation procedures. Use of these programs greatly reduces the time required to generate effective photos and ensures consistency in field of view, resolution, size, and color levels. JavaScript programs allow the user to embed sample identification and orientation information directly into each individual image file. Thus, the programs reduce errors arising from utilizing the numerous, nearly indistinguishable images involved in a study of low-strain rock. Since JavaScript is platform independent, it can be used with both Mac and PC strain and graphic software. Applying JavaScript programs during a normalized Fry analysis of finite strain in a

The first and simplest example will show the generation of trivial one-line JavaScript programs. The second example will show the run-time generation of JavaScript functions that modify groups of HTML checkbox elements. HTML is a language, however limited, and it can contain JavaScript code as well. In order to provide users at a web browser with the most responsive interface possible, the Laboratory programming staff has elected to make use of the JavaScript programming language (Flanagan, 1998). Because JavaScript runs within the user's browser (and thus on his computer), it can have a significantly shorter response time than a CGI program running on a remote web server. Since the web pages that contain the JavaScript code are dynamically generated by Perl programs, and since the contents of these pages are based on information available only at run-time, it follows that the JavaScript that manipulates these contents must also be created at run-time. The final and most
Each question carries 45 marks. Answer two questions from this section. 1. (a) Describe how JavaScript may be placed in an HTML document and the order in which scripts are executed by a browser. What does this mean? Show how a first class function may be assigned to the event handler of a button. [5 marks] (d) Javascript functions have a length attribute and an arguments attribute. (e) Show how Javascript may be us ed in an object-oriented manner by constructing a car object class which supports the instance variables owner, colour and model with associated get and set methods. (f) Describe the Javascript mechanisms used in part (e) to implement the car object class.
The objective of this workshop-based course is to provide delegates with the knowledge and skills required to design Web-based applications using the JavaScript scripting language. Web users, accustomed to the rich graphical environments of word-processing and spreadsheet applications, increasingly find pages designed purely with HTML to be static and uninspiring: there is little for the user to do other than to scroll the page, read the text and look at the graphics. Javascript gives web designers and developers the tools to enliven this experience by defining, or scripting, the response the browser makes when its user clicks a mouse button, types on the keyboard or changes a page. Javascript can be used to access all of the components and features of the web browser and its behaviour. These features are conceptualised within JavaScript as a collection of 'objects'. As an object-based language, learning JavaScript represents a valuable step for anyone looking to learn
In wwwoptions, use javascript in the LOC_ entry, and point it to an HTML file on your III server. That file can contain javascript links that load a page from elsewhere in the main window. You can also add javascript to validate input in text boxes. Includes with Javascript You can emulate a server-side include by embedding a reference to a javascript file: Beware of "namespace collisions"--there is already a lot of javascript in some III pages, be careful of using the same variable names as III. Use of javascript may introduce accessibility issues. Javascript can be turned off in the browser; some add-ons such as "pop-up blocker" software can also interfere with Javascript. Cross-browser javascript has historically been a problem.

There are many ways in which the World Wide Web can be used to support instruction. Web sites can serve as enhancements to traditional courses, or as the virtual setting for distance education. The challenge to educators is to make use of novel instructional techniques afforded by the Web to present material in fresh ways. Still other techniques involve running Java applets or JavaScript scripts, using CGI programs, or making use of plug-in software programs that enable Web browsers to run multimedia applications. We used HTML frames and forms combined with JavaScript programs to design on-line study tools, quizzes, and simulations. We used JavaScript [2] to create a multiple choice quiz on computer terms. We also used HTML forms and JavaScript to produce a fill-in type number system conversion quiz that uses random numbers to generate new problems each time the page is loaded. Our course tool allows students to practice such conversions, by entering values in a form and

But with so many Web technologies -- especially browser programming with JavaScript -- being within reach of everyday folks, we have wit-nessed an unprecedented explosion in turning the World Wide Web from a bland publishing medium into a highly interactive, operating system-agnostic authoring platform. Or applications can be much more obvious, such as delivering the content of a slide show in a one-page download while JavaScript controls the sequence of hiding, showing, and "flying slide" transitions while navigating through the presentation. Of course, JavaScript is not the only technology that can give life to drab Web content. In most cases, JavaScript can work side by side with these other technologies, even though the hype around some make them sound like one-stop shopping places for all your interac-tive needs. Finally, you learn about the origins of JavaScript and what role it plays in today's advanced Web browsers. In early December 1995, just prior to the

E-Government Manual

Commercial search engines such as Google, Yahoo or AltaVista as well as the search engine used on the government portal (http://www.bund.de) generally provide a thematically structured point of entry for the location of information. The content of a web offering which cannot be accessed by search engines due to the way in which it has been published, can only be located if there is a direct link to it from other websites or if the user knows the specific URL. One fundamental requirement regarding the presence of content on the internet or in an intranet is that the content of online offerings is available in search engines. Even though JavaScript should be avoided for reasons of security (see the "Secure Internet Presence in E-Government" module of the E-Government Manual), it is appropriate at this point to also draw attention to those aspects of JavaScript which make it impossible for search engines to locate content. To avoid difficulties in this regard, no navigation

How does the Web server pass the data, such as FORM input data sent from the browser, to the server-side programs? Usually an ASP page dynamically generates an HTML document, which is returned to the browser making the ASP page request. There are some disadvantages in the classical ASP, which the new ASP.NET technology was designed to solve. The server has access to all attributes of the server controls contained in ASP.NET pages, while the server has access only to those attribute values returned in HTTP request message in ASP pages. The response to any subsequent request of the page will take much less time. The class is instantiated to response to the request. The normal HTML tags and text are sent to the browser unchanged. ASP.NET is a unified Web platform that provides all the services necessary to build enterprise-class Web-based applications.   Javascript is a scripting language that can add interaction to an HTML WWW page. Despite the names being similiar, Javascript is very different from Java and the two have almost nothing in com-mon. Having said that, Javascript is object-based and uses commands referred to as event han-dlers to add WWW page interactivity. This works for most javascripts. Next highlight the javascript code that you would like to copy. ERRORS: If you get an error, in Netscape en-terjavascript: in the Location: box to get the javascript error messages. Dynamic Languages--ready for the next challenges, by design

These languages, designed to solve the problems that programmers of all abilities face in building and integrating heterogeneous systems, have proven themselves both despite and thanks to their independence from corporate platform strategies, relying instead on grassroots development and support. There is a category of programming languages which share the properties of being high-level, dynamically typed and open source. We propose the term dynamic languages as a compact term which evokes both the technical strengths of the languages and the social strengths of their communities of contributors and users. While many of the arguments presented in John Ousterhout's landmark paper on scripting are as valid as when they were written, changes in the information technology landscape and maturation of thinking about open source lead us to reexamine his argument. We believe this shift in importance warrants replacing the term "scripting language" with one that
