Improvisation is a venerable art, not only in non-Western musics all over the globe, often for millennia, but in Western "composed art music" as well, from the semi-improvised music of the late-medieval/early-Renaissance troubadours to the highly developed ornamental techniques of the high Baroque. While on the one hand we now have a new musical amalgam called "jazz rock," we also have many musicians and audiences who, looking beyond rock, have rediscovered jazz and the roots from which rock' n' roll sprang, a music black people used to call "rhythm and blues" (later, "soul"). I chose Jazz Central Station (JCS) [2] for this study because it is a well designed site that seemed to have a fair amount of conversation going on. For example, most folks will not click on any of these features unless they have an interest in jazz. The Cafe has many features intended to create community including the aforementioned Weekly Jazz Poll, People in our Neighborhood, newsgroups (or BBS as they call it), as well as an online chat feature. jgo Enjoy this complimentary printed version of Lessons Online, a series of Internet jazz guitar lessons authored by Bob Patterson and published by Jazz Guitar Online, the Internet publication for the Jazz Guitarist. This is the most common chord progression in Jazz music. The Harmonic Minor scale is one of more limited usefulness than the Major scale, but it yields some interesting possibilities. The melodic minor scale (also called the Jazz Minor) is a very useful one in jazz playing. The Lydian b7, or Lydian Dominant, starts on the 4th degree of the melodic minor scale. The Bebop Dominant Scale is basically a Mixolydian mode with an extra note --- a natural 7th. jazz Pick up audition music in the band office during band camp or when school starts. The audition will consist of the excerpt of "The Zachman is Back" - available in the band office, as well as improvising on F (concert) blues. Drummers will play "The Zachman is Back" excerpt as well as demonstrating a swing feel in & with sticks, a swing feel in with brushes, and a bossa nova feel, as well as soloing. This proceedure is very similar to the All-District jazz audition. The audition is on October 13th and the district jazz festival (rehearsals and concert) is on November 8nd. With the caliber of students in the Centennial bands, we should have several make the district jazz festival - but you have to audition. statefarmApp http://www.utea.org/qt&l/grants-awards-scholar/statefarmApp.pdf All you have to do is complete the application and cheer on the Utah Jazz! 2.Briefly describe the challenges your students face and your proposal for a $100 award on the page below. 3.Return the application to the UEA Children at Risk Foundation on or before December 15th. 1.All applicants will be screened for only one criterion: Does the proposal help kids succeed in school? 3.For each 50 points the Jazz score in a game, participating State Farm agents will give the next class on the list a $100 State Farm Good Neighbors for Good Schools award.
