The breadth of jazz material available in the compact disc medium is so limited at this point that even if we had the temerity to suggest a "best of" or "greatest" or "basic list" of jazz recordings, so many of the classic performances are not on CD that any such claim would be laughable to even the most casual jazz listener.

That is, up to 2/3 (or approximately 0.67 unit) of the total preparation required to satisfy requirement #1 may be this type of college training.

The week's offerings include student, faculty and guest performances and culminate on November 20 with a gala benefit concert by the SFSU Jazz Faculty All Stars, an electrifying ensemble of jazz pros who appear regularly at venues throughout the Bay Area.

Please include the head (melody) and examples of jazz improvisation for each selection.

Apart from his appearances as a guest soloist at jazz venues, he works regularly with his trio, quartet and quintet, undertaking concerts, broadcasts and festivals.

While W.E.B. Du Bois served as one of black America's leading intellectual thinkers and organizers, Langston Hughes reigned as one of its most creative and controversial artists.
Three years after the end of World War I, Hughes's first nationally published poem "The Negro Speaks of Rivers," printed in The Crisis in June of 1921, deeply stirred the emotions of readers throughout the country.
For Hughes the issue at hand was not the "common" people who create the "folklore" that often represents black culture, but the black "high society," whose race consciousness is tied to "the aping of things white" ("Negro Artist" 92).

The Swiss Music Syndicate (SMS) is a professional association of all musicians who play improvised music, regardless of whether this music has jazz, classical, rock, ethnic or other roots and affiliations.
The SMS deals with professional, social and cultural policy issues that can only be addressed and solved at supraregional or national level, often in the long term.
The Website will provide a public discussion platform, and a directory of all SMS members, with their addresses and biographical and discography information.
Over the past twenty years, this non-profit label has compiled the most extensive overview of jazz and improvised music in Switzerland.

London (23rd September,2003), TV and radio indie Somethin' Else has been commissioned by BBC4 to make two programmes covering the 11th London Jazz festival.
Jez Nelson says; " This year's London Jazz Festival is the strongest yet --and it's fantastic that the BBC are continuing their commitment to put it on TV. The students and staff at Hudson Middle School adopted Public School 234 after the September 11 tragedy.

As a result, the students collected over $1,600 dollars, which was sent to the school, along with a video card from the faculty and students.
Now the Jazz Band, under the direction of Mr. John Keon (our district's 2002 Teacher of the Year), will be traveling to put on a concert for their new friends.
While there, the members of the Jazz Band will deliver bookmarks and other gifts made by the faculty, parents, and students.

We develop a probabilistic mixture model, derived from the multinomial distribution, for the clustering and generation of variable sample-sized histograms.
An an improvisor's insight into what makes their behavior musically-appropriate is necessarily non-technical, vague, and abstract (Thom 2000b); in our approach, notions of musical-appropriateness are inferred (learned) by fitting a probabilistic model to the melodic structure found in the user's warmup bars.
Each bar of a warmup is transformed into a pitch-class histogram (PCH), which ignores the temporal ordering of a bar's note-sequence, instead focusing on the musician's preference for certain pitch types.
AstableC is defined as one that, when five identical learning experiments are run, produces no disagreements on pair-wise comparisons of solutions.
This argument is all the more crucial given that, during solo improvisation, vMn assumptions are likely to be violated.

This paper describes the design policy and specifications of the RWC Music Database, a music database (DB) that is available to researchers for common use and research purposes.
Various commonly available DBs have been built in other research fields and have made a significant contribution to the research in those fields.
The Popular Music Database consists of 100 songs --- 20 songs with English lyrics performed in the style of popular music typical of songs on the American hit charts in the 1980s, and 80 songs with Japanese lyrics performed in the style of modern Japanese popular music typical of songs on the Japanese hit charts in the 1990s.

In the world of jazz, oboe is the last instrument you would expect to hear.
Along with oboe, McCandless plays the English horn, bass clarinet, soprano sax, clarinet, wind controller keyboards and penny whistle just to name a few of the instruments that he plays on his own albums and the albums of Oregon, the group in which he plays.
On McCandless's recordings with Oregon, he plays with more of an Indian influence.
It uses the mixolydian mode--an influence of the Indian classical music that Coltrane incorporated into his Jazz style.
In India, Mariano learned to play nagasvaram - the Indian form of an oboe.
