JJA_transcript2003 The people who are sitting at this table actually do treat jazz as an international music and the festival that we're at is one of the greatest international festivals in the world. When you start discussing internationalism in jazz you have to address not only where a player is from, but what cultural elements they are bringing into the music and what they say is innovation. As to the quality of jazz criticism, obviously this not an objective answer, but I think it's really good right now. In New York City just before World War I, the Clef Club was a musicianoperated booking agency that sent bands out to play all kinds of gigs. In the 1960's and 70's, however, there were many more musicians' collectives. And during that time the Jazz Composers Collective has grown from bright idea to a mark of quality. Improbably, its members are still talking to one another --- and playing together, too.
