The breadth of jazz material available in the compact disc medium is so limited at this point that even if we had the temerity to suggest a "best of" or "greatest" or "basic list" of jazz recordings, so many of the classic performances are not on CD that any such claim would be laughable to even the most casual jazz listener.

In this article, I will explore some arranging techniques that are used for the classic jazz tet.
The classic jazz tet (1950s and 1960s vintage) consists of trumpet, saxophone (alto or tenor), trombone (or perhaps another saxophone), piano, bass and drums.
We will assume that we are writing for trumpet, alto sax, and trombone.
So that problem is solved, or at least addressed!
But since textural contrast is desirable, and since we know that arrangers have always contrasted unison passages with harmonized passages, let's examine some three part harmonic writing techniques.
The note chosen for the trombone is customarily an important guide tone such as the third or seventh of the chord.

DIGGING IT: Smith's community spirit has an evangelical fervor You could be excused on first meeting Daniel Ian Smith if you mistook him for a member of the clergy.
Smith is tall --- over six feet, with a heavy jaw, a deep baritone voice, and, well, a somewhat evangelical air about him.
So you wouldn't be surprised to find that the performance series he directs is called Jazz in the Sanctuary, and that it takes place in a church.
Their first concert presented NEC prof and free-improv master pianist Paul Bley in a trio.
Since then, Smith's various ensembles have featured the work of composers including Carla Bley and Marty Ehrlich.

Free jazz refers to a historical movement that, despite earlier precedents, first significantly flowered in the late 1950s in the US.
The particular advantage that jazz brought to this putatively avant-garde language arose from its foundation as an aural tradition, since many of these saxophone sounds were unnotatable (this was also true of some other instruments, notably the winds/brass and double bass).
John Zorn, born in September 1953, is a saxophonist and prolific composer who draws on roots from many traditions.
Whether he is really a free jazz exponent (a typically European view), or an avant-gardist/postmodernist (a more American position), Zorn qualifies one of the most eclectic musicians of any age.
