Sentencing must protect the public, punish offenders, and encourage them to make amends for their crime and contribute to crime reduction.

OJP-PrinciplesOfReconciliation http://xml.coverpages.org/OJP-PrinciplesOfReconciliation.pdf
While this document addresses the principles of XML development for the justice and public safety communities, it sets the stage for confronting similarly compelling issues associated with interoperability and information sharing among local, state, and Federal entities.
As detailed investigative work centered on the analysis of different XML specifications (or more precisely, implementations of the World Wide Web Consortium's XML Standard), it was obvious that three excellent efforts had been undertaken independently.

The History of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution
It brings to life stories about how persons of African descent in North America and their advocates have struggled for justice.
The shared experiences of African roots, the middle passage, servitude, slavery, racism, and resistance forged a new African American people.
The Fourteenth Amendment was added to the Constitution in 1868, but it was not enforced for African Americans until the late twentieth century.
Most African Americans saw education as a pathway to inclusion, greater freedom, and upward mobility.
In 1905 African Americans formed the Niagara movement to protest their lack of rights.

ExchangePoints
Rapid advances in information system and identification technologies are steadily driving justice agencies in the automation of their internal information systems.
Justice agencies throughout the nation increasingly recognize the importance of integrating their information systems in order to share critical data, documents, images and key transactions.
For these transactions, the local arresting agency does not need to exchange all information regarding the arrestee or the event which led to the arrest, but only that information necessary for the discrete transactions associated with pulling the necessary information or to provide the recipient agency with the information it needs to continue the justice process.

First Mission Covenant Church is located directly across the street from an elementary school in a neighborhood of ethnically diverse people.
Many children at neighboring elementary schools were several grade levels below their actual year in school; so for instance you might find a 3rd grader reading and writing at a 1st grade level.
Some members of the congregation were concerned and that concern led them to take action - they started an after-school program and named it, "Fresno Covenant Foundation."
Remarkably, after its first six months of operation, 80% of the participating children increased their reading and writing by one grade level!
The program utilizes about 50 college students and senior volunteers who provide one-on-one tutoring for about 120 children.
Joined-Up Justice http://www.isb.gov.uk/hmt.isb.application.2/news/media/2001/Joined-Up Justice.pdf
The drive towards joined-up government, notably within the criminal justice arena, highlights the need to approach improvements from a whole business perspective if we are to realise the full benefits.
All the Criminal Justice agencies are aware of their crucial dependence on the police to provide most of the case-related data.
"Building on these, we ran a number of workshops where the police, CPS and Magistrates' Courts representatives were able to work together to examine and improve their business processes as part of the efforts towards the project's objectives."
Progress and process So, business process mapping is the first essential step to enable both quantification and process analysis to take place.
justice
As social work sought to increase its standing as a profession however, it began to lessen its emphasis on its advocacy role believing that such a deemphasis was a necessary concession for increased professional status.
Instead we believe that the truly professional social worker must come to value advocating for social justice as one of her /his primary responsibilities and must possess the tools and knowledge necessary to identify specific, achievable ways that positive change toward social justice can best occur.
Valuing advocating for social justice involves first understanding the many ways in which "social justice" can be defined depending upon the economic, social and political ideologies of those who do the defining.
CJMonitor4
This, the fourth volume of the Monitor series, includes for the first time information on the average lengths of prison sentences imposed by Queensland courts.
Also included is a brief section on the criminal workload of the Court of Appeal and information on the cost of the criminal justice system.
Approximately 4 per cent of appearances in the Magistrates Courts (excluding SETONS matters) result in committals to either the District or Supreme Court for trial or sentence.
Additional cases ---known as ex officio matters --- are dealt with in the higher courts without there first being a committal hearing.
The number of people in prison increased for most offence categories, as table 2 shows.
Social Justice Information
Do you want practical experience in research, writing and advocacy about issues affecting social justice?
If so, you may be interested in the Social Justice Intern Program.
Most Social Justice Internships for 2003 were filled from applications submitted at the end of last year.
However, applications are now invited for some internships which have become available for the second session of 2003.
For more details, including contact addresses for the centres, see "The Social Justice Intern Program: Summary of Purpose, Content and Operation", which is available at the Faculty website and the Faculty office on level 10.
2. In each Session of 2003, each of the following centres will provide an internship for one or two students (LIMITED LIST IN SESSION 2, PLEASE SEE PREVIOUS LIST).

A 1993 Belgian law, amended in 1999, gives Belgian courts the authority to prosecute individuals accused of genocide, crimes against humanity, and war crimes, regardless of a crime's connection to Belgium or the accused's presence on Belgian soil.7 The law also explicitly prohibits immunity, making it the world's broadest statute conferring universal jurisdiction.
when a group of lawyers working on behalf of victims of military repression in Argentina and Chile persuaded Spanish judge Baltasar Garzón to seek the arrest and extradition of General Augusto Pinochet.
Indeed, the way that many frame the problem of Pinochet-style prosecutions, as a problem of international law and of international legal precedent, blinds us to some of the most intriguing possibilities of such prosecutions.
12a_proposal
Following the early success of the Cochrane Collaboration in health care, considerable interest was expressed in establishing a similar infrastructure for the development and maintenance of systematic reviews of high-quality research on the effects of social and educational interventions.
Criminal justice is one of the areas for the production and upkeep of systematic reviews within the Campbell Collaboration, and many individuals are interested in contributing to them.
One of the cautions issued by the small discussion group on justice at the July meeting was that 'delinquency prevention was too large an area' and needed to be more narrowly focused for review activity.
To date, no updated register of systematic reviews relevant to social and educational interventions is available.
