Our present focus on knowledge, particularly for KM, is often explicitly oriented towards commercial effectiveness.
As other social movements, this has taken a long time to penetrate, particularly into the conservative ranks and practices of management.4 The emergence of the explicit knowledge focus and the introduction of the term "KM" in the 1980s was no accident and did not happen by chance.5 Although it happened gradually and often was met with management uncertainty, it was a natural evolution brought about by the confluence of many factors.
Understanding based on knowledge is used to determine what a specific situation means and how to handle it.

TFPL and knowledge management A capability profile TFPL has been actively involved in knowledge management for over seven years.
Initially we worked with the early pioneers to understand what 'KM' meant, why it was relevant and what impact it could have on organisations and individuals.
Since then we have undertaken research, worked with clients in all sectors to develop and implement strategies, run and spoken at numerous events and have developed the worlds leading recruitment service for knowledge executives and their teams -- KnowledgeRecruit.
In 1998 we were commissioned by an UK Government Commission to undertake a major international project looking at the roles and skills required to successfully create a knowledge environment.
120 McKnight, Knowledge Networks

Information and Communications Technologies (ICTs) are playing a significant role in economic, political and cultural development.
They make possible the cross-border flow of information, promote international trade, particularly high technology, bits rather than atoms, type trade and help to attract foreign direct investment.
Stiglitz's "Scan Globally, Reinvent Locally" thesis may explain why the Internet is a particularly useful network in the development arena; even more useful than the traditional telephone or broadcast networks One might argue that the Internet itself is predicated on the same "global and local" principle.
It is up to the users in the developing countries to create applications capable of carrying out the task of localization in a fashion optimized to their needs.

The National Food Service Management Institute (NFSMI) was established by Congress in 1989 at The University of Mississippi in Oxford as the resource center for Child Nutrition Programs.
The vision of the NFSMI is to be the leader in providing education, research, and resources to promote excellence in Child Nutrition Programs.
The purpose of this project was to identify the competencies, knowledge, and skills unique to the responsibilities of school nutrition directors/supervisors.
Knows the school district's mission statement and how it relates to CNP as a part of the total education program.
Knows basic principles of nutrition as applied to developmental needs of children.

We propose augmenting a multimedia document repository (digital library) with innovative knowledge evolution support, including computer-mediated communications, community process support, decision support, advanced hypermedia features, and conceptual knowledge structures.
We believe that this concept can bring about the widespread flexibility or "virtuality" Mowshowitz envisioned.
We envision a pragmatic CKESS architecture to comprise a series of support tools that are independent of any particular digital library infrastructure.
Individuals considered to be "organizers of knowledge", initiate, evolve and modify a knowledge structure according to new collaborative understandings of the domain.
P3: A critical mass of community members will add documents, links and annotations, conversations, conceptual knowledge structures, and processes to an enhanced digital library in a sustained manner.

Recently, the IBM Institute for Knowledge-Based Organizations (IKO) studied the role of trust in knowledge sharing.
Factors such as the strength of the relationship between the knowledge seeker and the knowledge source, the difference between competence-based and benevolence-based trust and the type of knowledge being exchanged were explored.
For example, an employee can trust that a coworker knows the information that the employee needs (competence), but the coworker may not trust that he will be forthcoming at the time when the information is needed (benevolence).

Knowledge management (KM) promises to improve the quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of business, education, and government.
The tutorial will introduce KM strategy and processes, KM benchmarking, and technologies to support knowledge discovery, dissemination, and expertise management.
There is no prerequisite knowledge required, although general knowledge of management and information technology will enhance the value of this course for participants.
We will illustrate expert finding systems and technologies as well as capabilities to support distributed and virtual expert collaboration.
A final area addressed by the tutorial will be evaluation.

Knowledge Forum is software designed to support creative work with ideas, and a goal of its workplace applications is to maximize affordances for knowledge management while supporting knowledge building and innovation.
Conceptual modeling was used first as a tool for each individual to express his/her understanding of the project and second as a collaborative representation of the groups understanding.
Knowledge Forum is a database application that can serve as a collaborative tool for knowledge management and knowledge building in schools, communities and organizations.Knowledge Forum is designed specifically to enable and support core facets of knowledge creation through a number of software features.
Bolded items refer to processes specifically supported by Knowledge Forum software Contribute to collective knowledge advancement and shared goals; contribute ideas to communal design spaces; serve as a valuable team member; cultivate openness in knowledge work.

The Knowledge Center searches Solution entries created by Progress Software Worldwide Technical Support plus the old archived knowledge base entries, online Progress documentation and whitepapers.
Statement search In a statement search, the associative search engine measures the similarity of statements based on a weighting of all words used in the input statement (that is, the statement in the problem description) and all the words used in similar statements that exist in the solution database.
Computing concept weights Concept weight is based on a measure of how frequently the concept appears in all statements in the solution database.
Build features After the statement searches, the associative search engine builds features and feature clusters.

courseware, screens, IBM knowledge, IBM knowledge Producer, multiple, engine, template, Flash, Sim, browser.
IBM Knowledge Producer is a courseware authoring environment that replaces the tedious task of handcrafting courseware.
An IBM Knowledge Producer course is separated into template files, layout files, and content files in order to maximize reusability.
Some examples of templates are Text Only, Text With Image, Multiple Choice Single, and Simulation Point-and-Click.
Layout files contain information about where objects are placed on the screen, such as headings, graphics, or navigation buttons.
Layout files for screens can also be reused or new layouts can be created and coupled with an existing template file.
The Knowledge Player Engine then reads these files and produces JavaScript DHTML, flat HTML, or Flash files that can be viewed using a standard web browser.

Contained within every business is a wealth of knowledge about its policies and practices, and about the industry that it serves.
The purpose of this white paper is to introduce the principles of the discipline of Knowledge Management, to explore the benefits of Knowledge Automation Systems over traditional IT models, and to examine the real-world application of Knowledge Management to business---specifically, to the mortgage-lending industry---through the combined efforts of Gallagher Financial Systems, Inc. and The Haley Enterprise.
Knowledge Automation Systems incorporate expert system technology, which replaces procedural code in an application with a knowledge base, to contain knowledge, and an Artificial Intelligence (AI) engine, to drive decisions.

Feature article Knowledge management, librarians and information managers: fad or future?
This paper reviews some recent professional and academic publications on aspects of the theory and practice of knowledge management, with particular reference to the curriculum of professional education for library and information management and the career roles and prospects of information professionals.
It is concluded that many aspects of knowledge management practice bear a close resemblance to wellestablished practices in librarianship and information management.
We may feel, with some justification, that knowledge management is just a new name for librarianship
Its bandwagon represented the apparent victory of the uninformed in pursuit of the unachievable, and to information professionals it could probably only all end in tears (Holtham, 1997, p. 80).

The largest United States cash income support program for low-income families is the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC).
We designed the survey instrument and employed five interviewers who visited seven of these sites from January 1998 through April 1998 to interview taxpayers in general, and EITC beneficiaries in particular.
This produced a sample of 1,226 total interviews, 1,121 of whom expected to receive a federal refund and 846 of whom expected to benefit from the EITC.
