As the archaeology of our thought easily shows, man is an invention of recent date.
Is it possible to have a shared system of knowledge, such as education, without the autonomy of the individual being destroyed?
To question whether knowledge exists merely as persisting human self-delusion; humans need to feel that they are able to understand the world otherwise there is no possibility of controlling it.
To apply these ideas to the educational system, questioning whether its aim is to encourage autonomous thinking within individuals, or whether it is merely a means of encouraging a stable society through control of what the individual is able to 'know' about the world.

Abstract: In most cases in intelligent manufacturing applications the communication functions depend on the capabilities of the intelligent tool (e.g. expert system).
Typically the messages of these three logical levels are coded in the same way, are using the same protocols and are mixed according to the communication features of a given manufacturing environment.
The lowest level (Data Acquisition and Control Level) has the basic control and data acquisition type messages.
On the higher logical levels the Knowledge Acquisition and the so-called Knowledge Communication levels were separated.
There is no ontology - sub-symbolic or procedural representation is used in the module.
poster_OISE
This poster describes a year long Design Experiment involving a group of grade 5/6 students as they built knowledge in the curriculum area of Physical Science.
An analysis of the resulting database has been done to examine curricular coverage as it relates to the intended curriculum.
Several instruments were used to assess student understandings of the intended curriculum including interviews, pre/post testing of the concepts, use of Analytic Tool Kit (ATK) results and the archived portfolio notes of the students in the database.
Before the invention of the "Our Best Understandings" view the students had already deemed it necessary to invent the "Teaching Note" to help with clarifying the content of the various views so that important ideas could be located more easily.

customer, Buckman Laboratories, knowledge sharing, support, participation, business, resources, communication, buckman, forums.
it's probably fitting to say that Buckman Laboratories has, in recent years, finally discovered the right chemistry for effective knowledge sharing worldwide.
For one thing, such a style slowed the company's ability to respond to customers, as decisions flowed up and down the established hierarchy.
Then, in 1982, we at Buckman Laboratories moved to become customer driven, which necessitated a corresponding change in our workforce.
You can't shoot below the waterline because you could sink the ship.
In 1994 Buckman Laboratories began its explicit shift to a customer-intimacy strategy at a global marketing meeting where we identified our key global target markers.

Keywords: informatics in society, university education, higher vocational education, professional training, curriculum issues, taxonomies, academic requirements, business and industry requirements.
This paper opens with several definitions for the term discipline and from these selects one, the notion of an ordered system, as the lead-in to a discussion of several examples of ordered systems or taxonomies of Computer Science.
To maintain and extend the Computer Science taxonomy or body of knowledge we argue for a computer-supported learning system (CSL) that would represent the status of the universal as well as the personal body of knowledge (BoK).
Resolved: Informatics is a discipline and shares attributes in common with other disciplines and professions The word discipline can be interpreted in many ways.

technology, ATP, publications, patent, patent tree, dissemination, ETOM, innovator, publishing, papers.
The ATP encourages broad dissemination of knowledge produced in ATP-funded projects because it increases the number of potential users of the knowledge, and, therefore, may increase national benefits.
But, at the same time, ATP does not force innovating companies to compromise their ability and willingness to pursue early commercial applications of the technology by giving away all of their intellectual property.
Figure 1.3 is a patent tree for one of the 50 completed projects, a project to develop wafer ion-implantation, carried out by Diamond Semiconductor Group (DSG), a twoperson start-up company in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
Aside from publishing, presenting, and patenting, ATP projects have a high rate of collaborative activities.
When a good or service incorporating new technology reaches the marketplace, a buyer can learn a great deal about the technology.

2. If I don't know that I'm not a BIV, then I don't know that there is a tree before me.
S knows p only if S does not believe p in any of the closest not-p worlds or any more distant not-p worlds that are still close enough.4 ERA accounts for our inclination to think that if S knows that p, then she does not believe that p in any of the closest worlds in which p is false.
Given this, the only alternative situations that are epistemically relevant are those in which we use our belief-forming methods.
So are BIV worlds relevant to my knowing that I'm not a BIV?

education, lifelong learning, economy, developing countries, conference, governments, skills, technology, institutions, overall.
Background: Globalization, and the growth of the knowledge-based economy, pose economic and technological challenges to education systems worldwide to promote continued lifelong learning.
First, they need to overcome several long-standing problems: expansion of coverage to achieve universal access to basic education; significant expansion of secondary and tertiary provision; and a set of institutional reforms to improve the linkages between formal and non-formal education and the labor market.
Second, they need to embark on a further set of reforms to raise the quality of education through changes to content, teaching standards, and the use of modern technologies; and to significantly expand access to post-school learning opportunities, especially for adult learners, in a cost-effective way.

The transformation from agrarian society to industrial society to information and knowledge society has largely been brought about as a result of accumulation of knowledge and the products and services derived from the knowledge process.
Knowledge commerce is a relatively new term that looks at leveraging knowledge in business.
It encompasses the sales and transaction of knowledge products as well as capitalizing on knowledge to improve products and services.
Some of these include customer capital and customer relation management, Internet business model and Internet strategies.
Dr. Hawamdeh has extensive teaching and working experience in areas such as knowledge management, electronic commerce, document imaging, information retrieval, Internet and digital libraries.

diffusion, management, professions, fashion, practices, networks, community, Abrahamson, perspectives, discourse.
Despite what might be said about the feasibility or robustness of the idea, undoubtedly one of its astounding 'successes' is its heated diffusion among both academic and practitioner communities.
This diffusion, together with its popularity among major consultancies suggest that it has the hallmarks of a management fashion, and is likely to disappear as quickly as it arrived.
As can be seen, fashion-setting perspectives may offer more promise than traditional diffusion perspectives for explaining the expeditious diffusion of managerial ideas and discourses such as 'KM' that are characteristically ambiguous.
In support, some of our earlier work, for example, noted the importance of professional institutions and networks in shaping the diffusion of new production control technologies to manufacturing firms in Europe and North America (Swan and Newell, 1999).

We were greeted warmly by the museum curator, who seemed genuinely concerned about the culturally-sensitive issues raised by the display of Lakota artifacts.
As we entered the wing that depicted "The Conquest of the West," Lakota leader Joseph Chasing Horse paused before the Gatling gun and whispered to me, "My grandmothers and grandfathers were killed by this gun, all the women and children, and the young men.
I spoke with an instructional leader from the Lakota Nation, representing a people who traditionally educate their children by direct experience and through oral traditions carried from generation to generation by the elders and spiritual leaders within their society.

mind, folk, education, cognition, conception, cognitive science, learning, behaviorism, folk theories, practice.
Here we are in the information age, relying on a theory of mind that is older than the wheel.
Every other folk theory---folk physics, folk biology, folk economics---has had to yield to more powerful theories, better equipped to address the problems of an adventurous civilization.
I do not mean to discount the accomplishments of cognitive scientists in expert systems, language comprehension, and the like.
But the cognitive science that produced these accomplishments has been rooted in the same basic conception of the mind that has been with us at least since Plato's time, and that children in the Western world pick up spontaneously by the age of six.
What is being challenged is the basic conception of the mind as a container of objects---beliefs, desires, conjectures, remembered events, and the like---which the mind works on in cognition.
