"Yehudah Ben Teima says, be bold like a leopard, with ease like
an eagle, run like a deer and be valiant like a lion to do the Will
of your Father in Heaven.
What is interesting about Ben Teima's statement here is that this is
the only occasion in traditional Torah literature where reference is
made to emulate animal behavior.
While in the Torah itself G-d does compare certain tribes of Israel
to animals, nonetheless He does not say that we are to emulate their
characteristics.
A Jew can live a Torah life with ease and grace of movement only when
in a Torah environment surrounded by like-minded Torah faithful souls
Shao Hu, a mischievous Shaolin apprentice tricks his master into letting
him leave the temple without learning kung fu.
Hu soon finds himself mistaken for his twin brother, Shao Tu whose martial
arts skill and is well known.
Humor and exciting martial arts prove themselves to be a winning combination
despite a meandering tale of mistaken identity that features some of
the genre's best talent.
With the exception of Yeh, whose martial arts performance while playing
Shao Tu was uninspiring, the remaining fights are played more for laughs,
which balances the film nicely.
Without a doubt, fans of Hwang Jang Lee and super-kickers in general
should be lining up to get their hands on The Instant Kung Fu Man.
The role of breathing in the martial arts is complex, and extends far beyond
the physical act of oxygenating the blood.
As a karate student well conditioned to exhaling strongly whilst punching,
I was duly reprimanded for doing so in a Shaolin kung-fu class.
For much of this essay I favour the discussion of principle over technique,
since the principles of martial arts are, in general, more uniform than
the way they are implemented within particular styles.
Where I do descend into discussion on technique, it should be borne
in mind that being talked about, and not the method.
Inhalation is usually performed in the transition between stances or
positions and exhalation proceeds whilst the technique is performed.
The Science of the Past series also includes Ancient Egypt, Ancient Greece,

Trumble explains the ways in which respect for cats as sacred symbols
evolved over thousands of years into a fanatical belief in cats' divinity
that contributed to the Persian conquest of Egypt.
Countless intriguing facts encourage readers to imagine themselves as
ancient Greeks.

The Stanford Martial Arts Program (SMAP) is a collective of the various
martial art student groups practicing on the Stanford campus.
This relationship officially ended in the summer of 1999, and SMAP arose
in response as a student-initiated umbrella organization to help individual
groups deal with issues such as practice space, publicity, and funding.
Thanks to all SMAP club representatives for contributing content to
this handbook.
All Stanford students, faculty, and staff members are invited to join
our friendly and relaxed atmosphere.
