Grant Application-v11-14-02 _1_
Dear Friend of Wild Ones: For years, Wild Ones members and chapters have
worked with schools and nature centers to plant and maintain natural landscapesin
these centers of learning. In late 2000, the Wild Ones - Fox Valley Area
Chapter, started the Natural Landscapingfor Tomorrow fund to continue and
expand such projects in our chapter membership area. The annual application
deadline for grants from the Wild Ones ~ Natural Landscapingfor Tomorrow
fund is January 15th. Eligible Applicants Schools, other places of learning,
houses of worship and other public and nonprofit organizations in the Fox
Valley Area of Wisconsin may apply for this grant. of the Wild Ones ~ Natural

Edible landscapescan be just as attractive, yet produce fruits and vegetables
for home use. One can install an entirely edible landscape, or incorporate
simple elements into existing yards and gardens. What is edible landscaping?
Edible landscapingis the use of food-producing plants in the constructed
landscape, principally the residential land-scape. Edible landscapescombine
fruit and nut trees, berry bushes, vegetables, herbs, edible flowers and
ornamental plants into aesthetically pleasing designs. Why landscapewith
edibles? There are many reasons to incorporate edible plants into the residential
landscape.
One definition of a weed is that it is a plant out landscapeplan, it is
important that the area be of place. First, think of overgrown landscapes.
There are as many sky make up the ceiling and the ground is the homes over

Lincoln, NE- In response to numerous inquiries about downtown landscaping,
the Downtown Lincoln Association (DLA) is making names, locations and photographs
of streetscape flowers available to the public. A flyer containing the information
is accessible to the public in several places including the downtown kiosks
at the southwest corner of 11th and O, the northeast corner of 12th and
O, the southeast corner of 13th and O, and two in between 14th and 15th
on O Street. The information is also available on the DLA website, www.downtownlincoln.org,
under Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ's). DLA Maintenance Director Gene
Langdale receives, on average, five requests a day concerning the plantings.
He has fielded calls from all over the United States including Denver and
Illinois. Langdale said, "The feedback we've received demonstrates that

In February 1991 the Palo Alto Regional Water Quality Control Plant (RWQCP)
developed a new advanced treatment system that provides up to 1.5 million
gallons per day of reclaimed water suitable for parkland, schoolyard, and
landscapeirrigation (including residential lawns and landscaping) under
guidelines of state and county health departments. The new facility adds
three additional treatment steps- coagulation, a second filtration process,
and extended disinfection- to about seven percent of the tertiary-treated
water produced by the plant. These processes provide all the treatment needed
to meet California's highest irrigation standards for reclaimed water. The
plant provides the water free of charge to permitted operators of tank trucks,
including landscapers. The water is available at the RWQCP and also in Mountain
View, at a standpipe on Terminal Road

serving such use or building. Human Values - To provide direct and important
physical benefits to human beings through the use of landscapingto reduce

When designing and installing a firewise landscape, consider the following:
Local area fire history. To create a firewise landscape, remember that the
primary goal is fuel reduction. To this end, initiate the zone concept.
Zone 1 is closest to the structure; Zones 2-4 move progressively further
away. Zone 1. When maintaining a landscape: Keep trees and shrubs properly
pruned. Employ firewise landscapingand maintenance. Access additional information
on the Firewise home page: www.firewise.org Please see the other side of
this sheet for the Firewise LandscapingChecklist.
UNDER OR NEAR OVERHEAD LINES If you plan to plant near overhead power lines,
check the maximum mature height and width of each tree species being considered.
For planting sites under overhead lines, please check with your utility
for the minimum line height on your property. If the line height is 20 feet,
choose a shrub or tree with a mature height of 10 feet or less. ELECTRICAL
EQUIPMENT Electrical equipment such as padmounted transformers and switch
cabinets, or tops of underground vaults, must be kept free of obstructions
for two basic reasons: for service accessibility and for air circulation
to prevent equipment failure. During power outages, crews often find fences,
shrubs and trees in front of electrical equipment. If you are landscapinga
hillside and wish to build a retaining wall around electrical equipment,

of plant material and design sophistication of residential landscaping.
Landscapedesigns include evergreen, evergreen and deciduous, two plus color,

(2) "Landscapearea" means those individual or collective portions of the
lot devoted to landscape. A developer or property owner may receive credit
toward the required landscapearea for pedestrian walks or ways when such
walks or ways are decorative and/or textured in character and are designed
as a complementary part of the landscapearea. No more than 25 percent of
the landscapedarea can be treated with decorative pedestrian ways and be
included in the overall calculations for landscapedarea. Where the landscapematerials
used in required landscapeareas depend on water for sustenance, an underground
sprinkler system shall be provided. Bark mulch, ornamental stone and other
nonvegetative material shall not represent more than 50 percent of the landscapingwithin
all landscapedareas on a site. (20) Residential Landscaping: At least 50
percent of the

6.7 LandscapingConsiderations The use of landscapingat a roundabout is one
of the distinguishing features that give roundabouts an aesthetic advantage
over traditional intersections. The type and quantity of landscapingplantings
or other material incorporated into the roundabout design may be dependant
on both the site location and level of care available for maintenance. Exhibit
6-42 illustrates examples of landscapinginstalled at existing Kansas roundabouts.
A realistic maintenance program should be developed when designing the landscapingfeatures
for any proposed roundabout. For KDOT maintained roundabouts, the landscapingshould
generally consist of simple, hearty plant materials or hardscape material
that have minimal maintenance requirements. It is generally necessary for
local governments to assume maintenance responsibilities for the roundabout
Why is conserving water in landscapesimportant? In some households as much
as 40 percent of the water used each month finds its way into the landscape,
so future fresh water supplies depend upon wise outdoor water use. Water-wise
landscapingmeans many things. It means evaluating how much water the lawn
and landscapereally need, learning how and when to apply water in the landscape,
understanding that plants thrive with well developed, deep root systems,
using plants with lower water requirements, and minimizing water waste in
the garden. In the North Carolina, water-wise land-scaping, or xeriscaping,
is one of the Conservation Landscapingprogram principles. Shallow roots
make landscapeplants more vulnerable to temperature extremes and the damage
caused by drought and disease. "Xeriscaping" is an emerging landscapephilosophy
centered around
choices for you and the environment Have you ever groaned at the thought
of weeding, mowing and pruning on your day off? Winced at your water bills
in the summer? Or wondered what you personally can do to help the environment?
Maybe it's time to take a look at the garden and think about making some
trade-offs. Xeriscape garden: Peterborough Ecology Garden, To do that, it
helps to start with good information. That's why we set out to compare the
maintenance of seven different kinds of garden, each with different requirements
in terms of time, cost, water, fuel, fertilizers and pesticides. 1. Xeriscapes
made of up of tree, shrub and perennial species that are adapted to suit
local rainfall condi-tions and require almost no water-ing. 3. Wildflower
meadows featuring native grasses and wildflowers that mimic natural meadow
or prairie landscapes.
