The controversy is over an LAX project begun over a year ago on the northern boundary of the sand dunes that are home to the endangered El Segundo blue butterfly. Some nearby residents love the improvements, which included planting 90 fan palm trees, an irrigation system and a walkway along Waterview Street, Rindge Avenue and Napoleon Street between Pershing Drive and Vista del Mar. fact sheet landscapersThe storm drainage system is designed to collect stormwater - rain and snow melt - and release it directly to Clear Creek - untreated. Pollutants are transported in stormwater as rain and snowmelt flow across surfaces such as lawns, roads and parking lots, picking up substances such as fertilizers, pesticides, oil and sediments before entering Clear Creek. Contaminants that enter the creek degrade the quality of our drinking water source and the quality of fish and wildlife habitats. Therefore, care must be taken to ensure that stormwater runoff does not jeopardize the quality of Clear Creek. The following is a list of possible Best Management Practices (BMPs) that are applicable to your business. Several plants in your landscape can perform this triple duty during the upcoming hot season. Simple steps can help landscapes defend your home from dangers. Choosing landscaping that can ward off fires can also create new water savings. Selecting appropriate plants is particularly important during the summer months when water consumption rates tend to increase, and studies have shown that landscaping alone accounts for more than 50 percent of the total residential water usage. Creating a defensible space with appropriate water efficient landscaping can contribute to lowered water usage rates during the summer, and all throughout the year. -more-Summer Landscaping with a Purpose Page 2 of 2 Vibrant and Intro letter on webWild Ones is a direct outgrowth of a natural landscaping workshop offered by the Schlitz Audubon Center of Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1977. A camaraderie developed during the lectures, tours, and digs, but it was not until two years later that a "wild" idea blossomed into Wild Ones - Natural Landscapers, Ltd. Our resident expert, Lorrie Otto, taught us much about the natural landscaping philosophy - organizing yard tours to help us with planning our yards. We believe time will prove our landscaping methods popular for their economic and environmental benefits, but we are already proving, by example, that our landscapes are beautiful - naturally. These initiatives provide an important voice for the natural landscaping movement, where the majority of land use decisions are made - at the local level.
