A majority of residential homeowners use outdoor power equipment to
maintain the appearance and accessibility of their property.
The two most common applications of outdoor power equipment are cutting
grass and snow removal.
The most common piece of outdoor power equipment is the rotary push
mower.
The rotary push mower consists of a four-stroke single cylinder gasoline
engine, a deck, a blade mounted rotationally inside the deck, four wheels,
a handle for pushing or pulling, a throttle mounted on the handle and
an optional grass collection unit.
An automated/robotic lawnmower is capable of mowing a lawn by itself,
once it has been initially programmed.

The OFFROAD model is used to estimate the contributions of emissions of various equipment types to the overall off-road emissions inventory.
In support of pending regulation, however, Air Resources Board (ARB or Board) staff has performed a number of evaporative tests of small off-road equipment.
Because lawnmowers dominate the SORE category, lawnmowers were tested more often than any other equipment type.
Because the SORE category includes more equipment types than those tested, staff used the test results (including ATVs and forklifts) in order to estimate the emissions for other equipment in the SORE category.
The emission rate assignment was based upon engine size, equipment characteristics, and usage.
