"The Common Tragedy" by Jerrad Pierce There are plenty of
fish in the sea.
That resources can be intensely, and indefinitely exploited without
consequence is such an ingrained and unquestioned belief in our culture
that that phrase has entered everyday vernacular, despite many historic
examples to the contrary.
I'm describing my experiences of playing a game called "Fish Banks"
intended to recall the 1968 landmark work "The Tragedy of the Commons"
by Garrett Hardin.
Each team starts with the same assets (ships and cash) and play progresses
in rounds.
Hardin's thesis eloquently describes the mismanagement of common resources
which are clearly limited, even if renewable, and the cumulative result
of unfettered, perfectly reasonable individual actions: disaster.

Pollen is the male part of a plant's life.
Some people consider spring pollen season a bad time, especially if they are allergic to specific pollens.
Large pollens from trees like pine can get in the way and make a mess.
Don't blame the pines for allergy attacks.
The airborne pollen grains are swirled around the cone and tumble into the receptive base of each bract.
Because pine pollen is so big, we can see it is light yellow.
Smooth metal surfaces will s port a gritty, yellow dust.
This yellow dust can be breathed into your nose and mouth.

It started out in full force when I found the US release of the Magic Pez at Toys R Us.
The Pez message board also indirectly led me to the Columbus, Indiana Wal-Mart and the new Crystal Bugz set (an adventure described in one of the poems of this very issue).
Life is also good because this issue of Pezhead Monthly marks the second annual Pez Poetry Slam.
Pez Poetry is one of the few features which has been in every issue of Pezhead Monthly thus far, and there's good reason for that.

The bad news: RI Hospital has proposed a 2-year wage freeze for 2/3 of all UNAP members.
RI Hospital is demanding increases in employee health care costs.
RI Hospital now wants to eliminate retiree health benefits for anyone hired since 1989.
Imagine how different things would be if the Hospital had spent the $25 million to improve wages, benefits and working conditions for staff.
Let's send a message to the Hospital that the best way to show their appreciation is to negotiate a fair contract that provides the economic improvements we need, and that protects the rights and benefits of employees.

A Murrieta firefighter since 1993,he now drives and operates The city's master plan for Los Alamos Hills,which spells out how some 250 acres of eastside vacant land will be used,has won another award,this one from the Association of Environmental Professions.
The first place honors were for "outstanding analysis."
The area sets between Los Alamos and Clinton Keith Roads on the easterly side of the city and is to be home to a large community park and Murrieta's second high school.
Filing opens in July for three seats on the City Council that will be filled when voters go to the polls for this fall's off-year elections.

Surely one of the great financial surprises of the past year is that the Euro has failed to recover -- US current account deficits and the lack of saving, a high tech crash, US recession, US stock correction, terrorism in America notwithstanding.
There is every reason to believe that with the creation of the Euro an important step has been taken both for the economic restructuring of Europe and the broadening of world finance to a second lead currency.
The Euro came in the midst of the American boom, the money of an economy that had anything but -- slow and ossified, unwilling to reform, indeed unwilling to boom.

I grew up in a sports background with my dad being a major league baseball player back in the 50's.
If I can keep that in perspective every day, then I can feel pretty good about where I stand in life.
