Mad cow disease and foot-and-mouth disease may not have crossed our borders (yet?).

Contaminated livestock feed is thought to transmit mad cow disease, which is considered a threat to both human and animal life.

BSE is known as "mad cow disease."

It is a highly contagious viral disease of cattle, sheep, swine, goats, deer.

people that work in close contact with animals or animal feeds have no higher incidence of vCJD than the general public.

Many of these products may pose at least a theoretical risk for BSE infection.

The current theory is that a normal version of the prion protein.

The problem with antibiotics is that their long-term ingestion can increase the resistance of natural bacteria found in the human body.

Does chronic wasting disease (CWD) have the potential to adversely affect recreational hunting in America?
Although the ultimate effects of CWD are not known, it has grown from being endemic in a few isolated areas of the northwestern U.S. to being on the verge of epidemic status.
An uncontrolled outbreak chronic wasting disease in an area with high deer densities could have a crippling effect on deer population dynamics, thus having a severe impact on the billion dollar sport of recreational hunting in the United States.
According to many biologists, an uncontrolled outbreak in a state such as Wisconsin, with a population of nearly 2 million animals, would be devastating and could take decades to recover (Bishop 2002).

Facing a relentless saga of game farming disasters, governments across North America are being forced to 'rethink' the whole issue of privatizing and commercializing wildlife.
While unable to refute or address any of these facts, the Alberta government literally (perhaps even illegally), forced game farming through in 1987.
Ostrich and emu are all but worthless.
Llama breeders are so desperate they're trying to sell their animals for meat.
As predicted, horrific diseases continue to plague the industry: The US Secretary of Agriculture recently (September 21, 2001) declared a "State of Emergency" because of CWD on game farms.
Chronic Wasting Disease, is a transmissible spongiform encephalopathy of deer and elk, and a sister disease to 'Mad Cow.'

The issues surrounding foot-and-mouth disease are generating increased concerns, along with misconceptions.
Some concerns are warranted, such as the serious health risk this disease poses for livestock.
To separate fact from fiction, the Food Marketing Institute (FMI) provided answers to the following questions commonly asked about this animal illness.
While it can kill very young animals, most of the stricken animals recover.
The disease, however, leaves them debilitated, significantly decreasing meat and milk production --- presenting serious economic losses for livestock owners.
Once animals are exposed to the virus, symptoms begin appearing in three to eight days, but it can take up to two weeks.

During this last quarter of century, the research in biology has led to the enormous expansion of our knowledge.
For example, the ability to maintain cultures of totipotent human's embryo cells points towards new directions in fundamental research.
There is a great hope that, one day, we shall be able to use such cells for repairing deficient tissues, or even for replacing whole organ.
As long as these are used for therapeutic purposes, or as historical and legal tools, such modifications are well accepted by the public.
In contrast, there are equally virulent opponents and supporters of Genetically Modified Organisms in the food business.

Ten years ago the first cow became ill with BSE in Switzerland.
BSE keeps proving to be an unusual disease, which can still strike unpredictably ten years after the first clinical outbreak.
This was and still is the most important measure to protect the consumer. On December 1 the ban on feeding meat meal came into force -- the most important animal health measure.
Since May 1996 animal carcasses (e.g. carcasses of animals which for instance died of diseases or were killed due to a disease) may not be processed to meat-and-bone meal anymore and certain highly risky organs of cows, particularly the brain, the spinal marrow, the eyes and the tonsils must be burnt.

1986. It has affected nearly 200,000 cattle to date; the majority in the U.K., but at least 20 other countries have had cases of BSE.
It has resulted in the diversion of more than 5.5 million cattle from the human food chain into rendering and incineration in the U.K. alone.
Beginning in July 1989, and with modifications over time, USDA has banned importation of live ruminants and most ruminant products from countries with BSE.

Surveillance for BSE in the U.S. Surveillance began in 1990 and consists of examining brain tissue from cattle showing neurological signs that may be consistent with BSE.

Suppose Country A has 40 workers and each can produce either 3 units of food or 1 unit of clothing.
Draw in separate diagrams the production possibilities frontier for each country.
Present and discuss a separate demand and supply diagram for each of the three parts of this question.
Assume throughout this question that the laws of supply and demand hold in the beef market.
Suppose the equilibrium price of wheat in the U.S. is $5 per bushel and the equilibrium quantity is 1,000 bushels.

Fair game For each item, indicate the likely impact on the supply and demand for wine.
Then indicate the e ect on the equilibrium price and quantity.
This is the logic identified in the text, e.g., "At a price of tax, buyers should be willingto buy exactly as much as they were willing to buy at a price of $(x+ .40) without the tax."
For per-unit taxes, you can also use the ideas of marginal cost and marginal benefit: a tax on the sellers increases marginal costs by the amount of the tax, and a tax on the buyers reduces marginal benefits by the amount of the tax.

Update market information and refine market strategy for calves.
Right behind are companies that make animal feeds, drug companies that use beef products in vaccines, candy companies that rely on beef gelatins as key ingredients and even fertilizer companies that sell bone meal to gardeners.
Body weight loss or shrink is a normal occurrence of calves once removed from the cow, feed, or even their accustomed surroundings.
The new agreement/contract contains two important changes, a new format or method for settling complaints and new refuge requirements for Bt acreage.
