Mad cow disease and foot-and-mouth disease may not have crossed our borders (yet?).

Contaminated livestock feed is thought to transmit mad cow disease, which is considered a threat to both human and animal life.

BSE is known as "mad cow disease."

It is a highly contagious viral disease of cattle, sheep, swine, goats, deer.

Europe reeled from Mad Cow Disease and now its cousin, Chronic Wasting Disease, is grabbing headlines across the United States and Canada this summer.
Numerous captive elk and deer herds have been destroyed along with hundreds of wild animals in Wisconsin and Colorado.
It has been know for quite a while that CWD was contained in a relatively small endemic area of northeastern Colorado, southeastern Wyoming and southwestern Nebraska.
However, with the new discoveries in Wisconsin, and the western side of the Continental Divide in Colorado, officials (along with hunters and ranchers) are at a loss for a comprehensive plan of action - other than kill and burn as many animals as they can find to prevent the further spread of the disease.

The information in this fact sheet was compiled through a coordinated project of University of Wisconsin-Extension, Cooperative Extension; Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection, Division of Animal Health; University of Wisconsin-Madison -- College of Agricultural and Life Sciences and School of Veterinary Medicine; and U.S. Department of Agriculture, APHIS, Veterinary Services.
Q. What is Foot and Mouth Disease?
Infected animals may survive but the disease leaves them in very poor health, and it causes losses in production of meat and milk.
BSE is a brain disease that causes behavior changes and physical deterioration.
Q. What is the federal government doing to prevent the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease into the United States?

MANY SCI-ENTISTS BELIEVE THAT A MERE PROTEIN, TERMED A PRION PROTEIN, IS BEHIND THESE DISEASES.
The bacteria behind the anthrax disease, as well as the smallpox virus and plague bacteria, for example, use nucleic acid to take hold of your body.
Known as spongiform encephalopathies (SE), these untreatable ailments, including Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease, mad cow disease and scrapie, leave the victim's brain pocked with holes, typically causing dementia and eventually death.
Fortunately, findings on prion proteins provide a better understanding of these ailments and may provide some relief.
While some still suspect that a stealth virus or other agent with nucleic acid is the real transporter of infection, it's clear that prion proteins at least play a major role in SEs.

We encourage the Colorado Department of Agriculture to expand its efforts to prevent the introduction of FMD and BSE in Colorado.
We further applaud the efforts made and proactive measures taken by the United States Department of Agriculture to prevent the introduction of Foot-and-Mouth Disease and Mad Cow Disease in the U.S. and for its efforts to inform and educate the public about these diseases.

Most of you probably have heard or read about bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), commonly called "Mad Cow Disease" and Hoof and Mouth disease.
Let us review what is going on within United States in addressing the safety of our food supply.
It is important to remember that foot and mouth and mad cow diseases is a food supply issue, not a food safety issue.
Keeping our food supply safe and abundant is a challenging task.
Although proper handling practices and cooking to recommend internal temperatures are effective methods in preventing foodborne illness, much research has gone into the development of other interventions aimed at reducing the presence of microbial pathogens.
Many operators prefer prepackaged condiments, whether they be single service or bulk packaged.

Bio-pollution: interbreeding of genetically modified organisms (such as those engineered for increased resistance to pests) with "natural" organisms, resulting in progeny that may contain the engineered genes.
Genetic diversity provides a population with protection against disease and sudden catastrophes.
Antibiotic: chemical substances that kill or inhibit the growth of bacteria.
Thursday, April 11, 2002 Mineral: naturally-occurring chemical elements that are required for the functioning of the body and must be obtained from food or nutraceuticals.
Vitamin: complex chemical substances that are needed for the functioning of the body, but that generally cannot be produced by the body and must, therefore, be obtained from food or nutraceuticals.
Genetically modified organisms (GMOs): organisms that have had their genome modified artificially by genetic engineering.

Associated Press Writer AUSTIN --- Sand Branch doesn't have a water sewer system, its homes are old and in dire need of repair and mosquitoes infest the garbage that is sporadically collected.
In some unincorporated areas in Fort Bend County, residents who lacked sewer systems have contaminated their drinking water wells from dumping human waste outside their homes.
Both areas would seem to be accurately described as colonias, meaning "colony" or "subdivision" in Spanish, but in Texas referring to sprawling shantytowns that lack basic water and sewer systems and safe and sanitary housing.
"The colonias down near the border had the exact same situation as what we've got in my district in Fort Bend County," said Rep. Charlie Howard, R-Sugar Land.

Symptoms may not appear for many years after the disease process begins, but once they do, death usually occurs within 3 to 12 months.
So far, people who have been ill with vCJD have been aged between 16 and 52 years, with most in their twenties and thirties.
However, there have been no cases of "Mad Cow" disease in Australian cattle and there have been no cases of vCJD in Australia.
The Registry is similar to those operating in the United Kingdom and New Zealand.
Following completion of a look back study to 1970, there are currently 440 reports on the Register.

This information has caused a lot of concern that people in Germany might also be infected by blood and blood products from Great Britain.
"But blood and blood products from the UK are generally not on the German market", said Professor Johannes Löwer, Head of the Paul-Ehrlich-Institut, which is the competent authority for blood and blood products in Germany.
A marketing authorisation by written permission from the Paul Ehrlich Institute is required in order to bring blood products onto the German market, which are to be transfused directly to the patients, or products, which are industrially derived from blood plasma.
Rather the different nature of the pathogen distribution in the body is regarded as a piece of evidence that a transmission by blood and blood products might theoretically be possible.

A recent human outbreak of West Nile virus (WNV) in North America has raised concerns about whether the disease can be transmitted by blood.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported on September 19, 2002, that there is evidence of transmission of WNV through organ donation and blood transfusion.
The FDA says that live WNV has been isolated in fresh frozen plasma.
Although no specific studies have been performed, the FDA believes the risk of transmission by plasma derivatives to be extremely low.
