Contaminated livestock feed is thought to transmit mad cow disease, which is considered a threat to both human and animal life.

Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) is a disease condition in cattle which is thought to have originated in Great Britain.
Meat and milk have not been shown to carry the infective agent, and measures have been taken to exclude those parts known to carry the infective agent (primarily brain and central nervous system tissue) from the food and feed supply.
BSE is often referred to as "mad cow" disease, because animals infected with the disease are often irritable and can react in a somewhat violent or threatening fashion when approached by humans.
· Maintain copies of all invoices for all feeds received that contain animal protein.

State for Science, Research and Development has his way.
Gilbert Normand is championing a proposal to create the academy as a scientific strike force, an independent advisory body that could respond quickly to the concerns of government, as well as to the private sector and general public.
"One of the big problems we have [in Canada] is the inability of the government to be able to react to new scientific discoveries," Dr. Normand said in an interview.
As Dr. Normand envisions the Canadian Academies of Science, the organization would be governed by a board of directors that includes seats for the general public as well as researchers.
The government could commission reports from members of the academies on such topics as stem cell research, cloning, and water quality.

- October 20, 2002 -- InPro Biotechnology is the exclusive, worldwide licensee of the Conformation-Dependent Immunoassay (CDI), which has been in development for more than six years at the Institute for Neurodegenerative Diseases (University of California, San Francisco).
These diseases include Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE), commonly known as "Mad Cow Disease", Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (CJD) in humans and Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) in deer and elk.
Unprecedented sensitivity and specificity make the CDI a powerful weapon in the campaign to stop the spread of animal prion diseases and to prevent transmission of prion diseases from animals to humans.
The CDI ushers in a new generation of sandwich immunoassays employing high-affinity recombinant antibody fragments for the detection and capture of the prion protein (PrP).

The elk had been slaughtered by state officials because they were suspected of harboring chronic wasting disease (CWD), a form of "mad cow disease" that strikes elk and deer.
A recent report in SCIENCE magazine argues that the transmission of infectious diseases from wildlife to humans has reached epidemic proportions worldwide during the past two decades, and that the problem is being exacerbated greatly by "globalization" of the economy.

Small, extra-chromosomal, circular DNA molecules that can replication autonomously in bacterial cells Genetic exchange among bacterial strains occurs via (unidirectional) the transfer of plasmids, or pieces of plasmids from a donor strain to a recipient strain.
After transfer, homologous recombination can take place in the recipient strain between its main chromosome and homologous sequences carried on the transferred piece of DNA.
Genes on the F-factor facilitate cell/cell interaction and F-factor transfer from donor to recipient cells (F-).
F-factors and the main bacterial chromosomes in most bacteria contain insertion sequences (i.e., the simplest transposons) that allow F-factors to integrate into bacterial genomes via homologous recombination.
