Mad cow disease and foot-and-mouth disease may not have crossed our borders (yet?).

Contaminated livestock feed is thought to transmit mad cow disease, which is considered a threat to both human and animal life.

BSE is known as "mad cow disease."

It is a highly contagious viral disease of cattle, sheep, swine, goats, deer.

people that work in close contact with animals or animal feeds have no higher incidence of vCJD than the general public.

Many of these products may pose at least a theoretical risk for BSE infection.

If these projections are realized, it will be difficult to break the $50/cwt mark for live priced hogs this summer.
Furthermore, Oct-Dec slaughter would total about 800,000 smaller than the record back in 1998, which could cause prices to drop below break-even for a substantial stretch.
With improved expectations for the general economy and increased beef demand from South Korea and Mexico observed late in 2001, projections for beef demand are looking more favorable than they were several months ago.

At first, I was unsure of my level of commitment to the protest, not wanting to appear as a "spoilsport" or cranky cultural elitist.
The results, in my opinion, are the same: to voice an opposition to a cultural milieu that has come to mirror the hegemonic consumerist tyranny that good art is supposed to rail against.
In New York city, when they had their cow parade, the PETA-sponsored cow was rejected because it was decorated with butcher's marks intended to comment upon the hypocrisy of parading an animal that is inhumanely slaughtered and consumed by the millions.
We talked to several different artists who had designed pigs that were selected.

Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) is a severe, highly contagious and economically devastating disease of ruminants and swine.
The virus can be spread by animals, people, or materials that bring the virus into physical contact with susceptible animals.
In susceptible animals, FMD virus causes a chronic, debilitating disease characterized by fever and blister-like lesions followed by erosions on the tongue and lips, in the mouth, and between the hooves.
The only continents currently free of the disease are Australia, Antarctica, and North America.
We recommend that AZA institutions ask recent travelers from FMD countries not to enter animal contact areas, behind the scenes tours, or farm experiences.

The following information will help you to become familiar with the history, epidemiology and clinical course of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy and Variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease, and ways to reduce the risk of exposure.
This agent BSE is a slowly progressing degenerative brain affects the brain and spinal cord of cattle and lesions are disease of cattle.
There have been cases of transmission inutero from cow to calf.
At present, there are no cases of vCJD in current/previous service members or family members.
Although the risk of adverse health effects is small, the exact mechanism for infection and the effect of repeated exposures to BSE contaminated beef is unknown.

The standard practice of selecting a single model from some class of models and then making inferences based on this model ignores model uncertainty.
Bayesian model averaging provides a coherent approach for accounting for model uncertainty.
Stochastic models for spatial prediction are becoming increasingly important as the cost of collecting spatially referenced data continues to decrease.
There are many other issues in the application of and philosophy behind Bayesian model averaging that are not considered here such as speci cation of the prior model probabilities (2), averaging over more than one class of models, interpretation of the results, and model checking.
Some of these issues receive further treatment in Hoeting D. Draper, E.I. George and M. Clyde.

Hunters need to tell political leaders of their concerns about CWD.
Indicate your support for increased financial assistance to state wildlife and agricultural agencies to combat CWD.
The Chronic Wasting Disease Alliance website (www.cwd-info.org), is frequently updated with new information.
CWD is a neurological (brain and nervous system) disease found in deer and elk in certain geographical locations in North America.
While CWD is similar to mad cow disease in cattle and scrapie in sheep, there is no known relationship between CWD and any other TSE of animals or people.
CWD is known to infect wild deer and elk in Colorado and Wyoming, and wild deer in Colorado, Nebraska, South Dakota, Wisconsin, Illinois, New Mexico and Saskatchewan.

New inspection procedures, being enforced by the FDA and the USDA, not only promise detention and exclusion of European meat products, but may also affect imports of any product which might conceivably include animal ingredients, or animal by-products, regardless of country of origin.
Under this new program, implemented to prevent the spread of Mad Cow Disease into the United States, FDA has even detained shipments of pet chews manufactured in Canada consisting of animal by-products made from USDA-inspected cattle.
Both agencies are committed to combining their resources to prohibit entry of all animal products which may, by any manner or for any reason, be infected with BSE.

vCJD_Bulletin1

A recent publication in the medical press (Lancet, September 16th: Vol. 356, pages 999-1000) reports the transmission of BSE (Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy or Mad Cow Disease) by blood transfusion in sheep.
The agent responsible for BSE disorder in animals is generally believed to be the same agent, which causes new variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (nvCJD) in humans.
This report has raised new concerns that blood from human beings in the symptom-free stages of nvCJD could transmit infection to recipients of blood transfusions.
Even though health officials have searched world wide for evidence that this disease has been transmitted to patients with haemophilia, as of this date, no cases of either the classical or new variant form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease have been found in persons with haemophilia from anywhere in the world.

An Inside Report on Food Safety and the Food Industry Aug./Sept.
Reality has finally begun to descend on the food irradiation industry --- an industry that has been living in a fantasy world for more than 40 years.
The people have spoken (again) and they have told the FDA (again) that they overwhelmingly oppose allowing irradiated food to be called "cold pasteurized" or "electronically pasteurized."
Even though 98.2 percent of the Americans responding to the FDA's recent request for public comment said they wanted the current labeling law maintained or strengthened, the agency told Congress that there was still "no consensus" on what should appear on the labels of irradiated foods.
