Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) is a specific, infectious, neurological disease of deer and elk in the United States and Canada.
There is convincing evidence that the new variant form of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease is caused by the same agent that causes bovine spongiform encephalopathy and is the result of ingesting beef contaminated with brain or spinal cord tissue from affected cattle.
The cause of CWD, and the other TSEs, is not known for sure, but has been associated with the accumulation of an abnormal, protease-resistant protein referred to as prion protein in the brain and in some instances, eyes and lymphoid tissue of affected animals.

Q: What is Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD)?
A: CWD is an untreatable, fatal neurological (brain and nervous system) disease found in deer and elk.
It is believed that the agent responsible for the disease may be spread both directly (animal-to-animal contact) and indirectly (from soil or another surface to animals).
A: Infected animals begin to lose bodily functions and display abnormal behavior such as staggering or standing with very poor posture.
A: CWD has not been shown to affect humans at this time.
However, health officials advise hunters not to consume meat from animals known to be infected with CWD.

With BSE spreading all over the world -- as news reported that animal fodder were imported -- the share prices of lysine (animal growth stimulant), pig and poultry feeds, and poultry production companies strongly rose on February 5 despite a drastic fall of the KOSPI composite.
Recently, the international lysine price strongly upturned as demand for botanical feeds (instead of animal feeds) is expected to enlarge due mad cow disease.
The international lysine price surged to US$2,100 per ton last December and to US$2,500 ~ 2,600 per ton in February (vs. US$1,250 ~ 1,320 per ton in 3Q00).

Prana Biotechnology is a biotechnology company seeking to commercialise its existing patented Platform Technology, with applications covering a broad spectrum of age-related diseases, particularly Alzheimer's disease.
Prana's intellectual property portfolio has emerged from research conducted at the Massachusetts General Hospital (the largest teaching hospital for the Harvard Medical School) and the University of Melbourne, headed by three of the world's leading Alzheimer's disease experts, Professors Masters, Bush and Tanzi.
The Company is in the development stage, and because commercialisation of any product is not likely for some years, investors should view the shares as speculative.
Given the quality of the research and drug development efforts to date and the calibre of the scientific team, Austock believes that Prana is well positioned to achieve commercial success.
The work conducted by these institutions has identified compounds for the possible treatment of Alzheimer's disease.

Until now, dairy has largely escaped the battle over genetically modified foods that's swept Europe, and to a lesser extent the U.S. Most analysts do not look for any rules involving dairy and biotechnology to emerge from new World Trade Organization talks.
The U.S. will not gain a foothold in global dairy markets with cost-competi-tive skim milk powder even if the U.S. government discontinues its price support program for nonfat dry milk and other dairy commodities, according to economist Scott Brown, dairy program director at the Food and Agricultural Policy Research Institute at the University of Missouri.

When you hear about statistics and probability it is often in connection with a health scare such as the one about Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD).
Based on the available data, from 1985 to 1989, she worked out that the expected number of cases in the United Kingdom over this period was 3.6, and reported that the probability of 10 or more sporadic cases of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease occurring in people aged 15-39 in the six years from 1 May 1990 is 4 in a thousand.
In this article you can see that the argument hinges on the interpretation of observed data compared to predictions.
