Mad cow disease and foot-and-mouth disease may not have crossed our borders (yet?).

Contaminated livestock feed is thought to transmit mad cow disease, which is considered a threat to both human and animal life.

BSE is known as "mad cow disease."

It is a highly contagious viral disease of cattle, sheep, swine, goats, deer.

people that work in close contact with animals or animal feeds have no higher incidence of vCJD than the general public.

Many of these products may pose at least a theoretical risk for BSE infection.

Operationally, the import control system provides for the review of information about every product offered for entry into the U.S. and the opportunity for physical examination of the products.
These Alerts are used to identify problem commodities, problem shippers, or problem importers, in addition to providing guidance for import coverage.

Our exploding technology and the resulting worldview that we can manage and tinker with everything on the planet have made these times the most complex in human history.
Arriving at practical and ethical decisions about controlling technology has become difficult, especially for laymen, who often find themselves looking on, bewildered, while opposing scientists hurl incomprehensible jargon at one another.
But in most of these controversies it is wrong to confine the debate to narrow technical subjects; the right context is usually much broader and far more accessible to the public.
The altered E. coli bacteria can be grown in vats, producing large quantities of rBGH, vastly more than could be obtained economically by extracting the unmodified growth hormone directly from cows.

Each day, patients across the country rely on the goodwill of blood donors to ensure there are adequate quantities of blood and blood products available.
As of September 17, 2001, people will no longer be eligible to donate blood or plasma if they have spent a cumulative total of three months or more in the United Kingdom (U.K.) since 1980, or if they have spent a cumulative total of three months or more in France since 1980, or if they have spent a cumulative total of five years or more in Western Europe outside the U.K. or France since 1980.

I am here today to provide testimony based on 12 years of professional experience with bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), commonly referred to as "Mad Cow Disease".
For the benefit of the committee, I have had the privilege to serve on both the US and the UK scientific Advisory Committees on spongiform encephalopathies, so that I can compare the US precautions to the situation that has evolved in Europe over the past 15 years.
Importation of affected animals (cattle and other ruminants) and contaminated products of animal origin such as meat and bone meal represent the greatest risk for the introduction of BSE to the US.

GuidanceDoc

http://www.nnfa.org/services/science/pdf/GuidanceDoc.pdf
First diagnosed in 1986 in Great Britain, bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE), widely known as "mad cow disease," is a neurological disease affecting the central nervous system of cattle.
Other TSE's include scrapie in sheep and goats, chronic wasting disease of deer and elk, and Creutzfeldt-Jacob disease (CJD) in humans.
Classical CJD occurs in about one person per million per year and was around long before the emergence of BSE in cattle, occurring spontaneously via inheritance or accidentally as a result of medical procedures.1,2,3 New variant CJD is directly linked to the consumption of meat/bone meal from BSE-infected cattle.
FDA has stated that the BSE issue is a food issue, not specific to dietary supplements.
However, manufacturers of dietary supplements who include bovine-derived materials must ensure they follow appropriate quality-control measures.

That was the message from the International Cooperative and Mutual Insurance Federation's 16th meeting of reinsurance officials in Athens at the end of May, when delegates said government help is needed to provide adequate cover for European farmers.
William Dick, Partner Re's head of agricultural services, says: "Agricultural risks are problematic because of the exposure to some catastrophic risks, notably drought, epidemic disease and flood.
Weather -- the greatest risk Epidemic diseases may strike fear into the hearts of farmers, and the insurance industry may balk at the prospect of accepting them, but the greatest single exposure in agriculture is the weather.

It is pretty ironic that one hundred years later history has repeated itself and, confronted with performance related pay and being the only one of the six teacher unions in England and Wales to consistently oppose performance related pay, that we are the fastest growing union during the last year in England.
I used to believe, as a teacher in London, that the policies of the Blair government had been specifically crafted for the irritation, annoyance, and demoralization of teachers in England and Wales, resulting in a massive teacher shortage crisis.
The quality and standards agenda was taken from us to bring in, instead, a market for schools with schools competing for pupils, with the most popular getting bigger and the weaker going to the wall.

This paper briefs Members on the present situation of Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy (BSE) and variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (vCJD) in Hong Kong and overseas and the actions taken by the Administration in dealing with the diseases.
3. Epidemiological studies have suggested that the most important cause of the spread of BSE among ruminants (animals that chew the cud such as cattle, sheep and goats) is related to the consumption of animal feed containing ruminant-derived meat and bone meal1.
BSE specific Health Assurance for Imported Beef and Beef Products For beef and beef products imported from high BSE incidence countries (i.e. UK), the additional health assurance include (a) The beef is deboned, or the beef products are derived from deboned meat.
