GENERIC/BASIC PROGRAM ADVISING INFORMATION – CAL STATE SAN MARCOS CSU PRE-NURSING CORE The proposal for Cal State’s new Nursing Program is currently under review.http://www.csusm.edu/nursing/Generic_Basic_pdf.pdf. Final approval is anticipated by Fall 2005. The following Pre-Nursing Core has been adopted by all CSU Nursing Programs. A minimum GPA of 2.75 in these Pre-Nursing Core courses, below, has been submitted for approval as a requirement at CSUSM for entry into our 3-year Generic/Basic Nursing Program (B.S. Nursing). Students should strive for the highest grades possible in these Pre-Nursing courses, as these courses provide the foundation for all future Nursing courses. As proposed, students must complete all Pre-Nursing and Nursing Major courses with a grade of C or better (including GE). As of this point, admission to the University for Pre-Nursing, does not guarantee admission to the 3-year Generic/Basic Nursing program. Additional GE and Graduation Requirements at CSUSM, which can be taken prior to entry into the 3-year Generic/Basic Nursing Program, if desired. The following CSU Pre-Nursing Core has been adopted by all CSU Nursing Programs. This Pre-Nursing Core has been submitted for approval as a requirement at Cal State San Marcos for entry into the following Nursing Programs at Cal State San Marcos: Generic/Basic Program -- leads to a B.S. in Nursing (BSN). This program is intended for students who do not hold an RN (Registered Nurse) or LVN (Licensed Vocational Nurse) license. RN to BSN Program – for licensed RN’s who have completed previous Nursing coursework at a regionally-accredited institution. LVN to BSN Program – for licensed LVN’s with completed previous vocational Nursing coursework at a regionally-accredited institution. A grade of C or better is required in these Pre-Nursing Core courses. The various nursing programs, above, have different minimum, overall GPA requirements for these Pre-Nursing Core courses. Be sure to read the specific requirements on the Nursing Web site for the particular program in which you are interested. Only exception for the Pre-Nursing Core: Cal State San Marcos will also offer the LVN to RN 30-unit Option. Within this context, nursing personnel need to be recognized both nationally and internationally for their important contribution to the overall objective of “health for all”.http://www.who.int/hrh/nursing_midwifery/nursing_convvention_C149.pdf. This Convention is nearly 30 years old, yet sadly not much progress has been made in many countries towards improving working conditions in nursing. The relationship between poor conditions of employment and work of nursing personnel and shortages is complex. The Convention recognizes the vital role of nursing personnel and other health workers for the health and wellbeing of populations. It sets minimum labour standards specifically designed to highlight the special conditions in which nursing is carried out. The Convention and its Recommendation are intended to strengthen the rights of nursing personnel and to guide policy makers, workers’ and employers’ representatives in planning and implementing nursing policies within the frame-work of a given country’s overall health policy. In Norway, the regulations on the technical content of training in nursing and on the system of assessment were amended in 2001. Regarding the Nursing Personnel Convention and Recommendation, the Ministries of Health have a key role as well as the relevant workers’ and employ-ers’ organizations in both public and private health sectors. Together with the competent legislative and labour authorities, they are the ones to monitor and promote the solutions to nursing personnel issues in a given country.
