Many people assume that any article in a nursing publication is written by a nurse or that at least one of the authors is a nurse if there are multiple authors. If you need an article written by a nurse, your FIRST step should be to find nursing journals, but you cannot necessarily stop there. Your best bet to be sure that you are getting an article written by a nurse is to search the CINAHL database. In the “more search options” section, limit your search to the Journal Subset “Nursing”. This will ensure that only nursing journals are returned in your result set. You may also want to add the word “nursing” to your search; use AND with your other search term(s). Make sure to check the credentials of the author in the citation and/or on the first page of the article to make sure that your article is actually written by a nurse. There are several key differences between CINAHL and Pro-Quest Nursing Journals. You can search by the subject term “nursing theory” and add the name of your theory as a major descriptor (meaning that it is the main focus of the article) to find articles about a nursing theory.
