Because the nation and the Commonwealth of Virginia are experiencing nursing shortages, there are many employment opportunities for nurses in the community.http://www.jt.cc.va.us/downloads/academics/nursinginformationpacket.pdf. Due to the popularity of our program, enrollment in our Nursing Program is limited and admission is competitive. Once accepted into the program, the AAS in nursing requires four semesters of intensive study. The nursing curriculum is demanding and requires outside time commitments to complete coursework requirements. We understand that many students must continue to work as they seek to advance themselves academically, but please realize that it is very difficult to work full-time while enrolled in the nursing curriculum. Nursing literature identifies the following factors that negatively impact a student’s success: a) work 20 or more hours per week, b) family responsibilities, and c) retaking prerequisite courses multiple times. The enclosed packet provides step-by-step procedures for applying to the program, as well as information sheets on the available Nursing Program options. The Division of Medical Assistance (DMA) spends over $1.http://www.umassmed.edu/uploadedfiles/DepressionExecSumFINAL5_6.pdf.4 billion dollars a year for nursing facility care for its senior members, and is committed to working with the nursing facility industry to ensure the delivery of appropriate care to its MassHealth members. Depression in the elderly is common and is thought to be under-treated in seniors and for those elders residing in nursing facilities1 2 3. In 1999, DMA commissioned a study conducted by UMass Commonwealth Medicine to learn what types of antidepressant medications, dosage and duration of medications were being prescribed to nursing facility residents. The findings from that study demonstrated that almost all Massachusetts nursing facility residents were, in fact, prescribed the newer SSRI antidepressant medications to MassHealth residents, in the appropriate dosage. While the study found Massachusetts nursing facility medical staff to be in the forefront for prescribing practices, it was beyond the study’s scope to determine whether residents who were being treated for depression had an appropriate diagnosis of depression, whether other treatment options were being offered, and whether medications were being appropriately monitored. In August 2001, DMA commissioned the UMass Center for Health Policy and Research (CHPR) to conduct a second study, Depression in Nursing Facility Seniors, in order to: Assess the (rates of) screening and (appropriate) diagnosis of depression among elderly members residing in a sample of nursing facilities. Assess rates of treatment of depression in elderly MassHealth nursing facility residents. Identify potential best practice ...

Each year the MetLife Mature Market Institute con-ducts a market survey of nursing home and home care costs in the United States.http://www.metlife.com/WPSAssets/18756958281159455975V1F2006NHHCMarketSurvey.pdf. Daily nursing home rates range considerably by region. The Shreveport, LA area had the lowest rates for a private room in a nursing home averaging $111 per day and Alaska the highest averaging $578 daily. • The national average daily rate for a private room in a nursing home is $206, or $75,190 annually. • The national average daily rate for a semi-private room in a nursing home is $183, or $66,795 annually. Home care and nursing home care each represent opposite ends of the care continuum. Home care covers a wide range of health and social services provided in the home of the care recipient, and a nursing home is a residence providing room, meals, skilled nursing care, and medical services to residents. It is typi-cally delivered by nurses, therapists or specially trained home health aides, sometimes called certi-fied nursing assistants, who work under the direc-tion of a physician and/or registered nurses. Nursing homes provide care to residents with chronic conditions requiring permanent care or to those needing a recovery period after hospitaliza-tion. This market survey focuses on the hourly rates for home care services, both for home health aides and homemakers or companions, and daily rates for nursing homes in 87 major markets across the United States. Nursing Home Overview Admission to a nursing home could be for short-term rehabilitation services, but for many Americans, the move to a nursing home is a per-manent one. According to data from various National Nursing Home Surveys from ...

Feasibility of using quadriceps-strengthening exercise to improve pain and sleep in a severely demented elder with osteoarthritis – a case report Accepted: 2 October 2002 © 2002 Tsai et al; licensee BioMed Central Ltd.http://www.biomedcentral.com/content/pdf/1472-6955-1-1.pdf. This article is published in Open Access: verbatim copying and redistribution of this article are permitted in all media for any purpose, provided this notice is preserved along with the article's original URL. Background: Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee, which is prevalent among older adults in nursing homes, causes significant pain and suffering, including disturbance of nocturnal sleep. This report describes our test of the feasibility of such an exercise program, together with its effects on pain and sleep, in a severely demented nursing home resident. Treatment options for frail nursing home residents with OA are limited. Nursing home residents tend to be in poorer overall condition than their counterparts dwelling in the community, and pharmacologic intervention tends to exacerbate their already frail physical condition. An in-tervention that is easy to administer and has few side ef-fects is thus needed for nursing home residents. Exercise in general is beneficial for nursing home residents with OA pain and disability. However, the feasibility of using a quadriceps-strengthening program for severely de-mented nursing home residents has not been tested. This case report describes our experience with a severely de-mented nursing home resident, the effects of quadriceps strengthening on his pain and sleep, and the implications of our experience for such an exercise program with this population. He was ...

The Kentucky Board of Nursing (KBN) interprets the statutes governing nursing practice and issues advisory opinions and guidelines on safe nursing practice.http://www.education.ky.gov/users/jneal/HSRG/ch2/KY_board_of_nursing.pdf. The Scope of Practice Determination Guidelines is a summary of statutory definitions and policy and can assist school administrators and their nursing staff, “determine whether the performance of an act is within the scope of practice for which the nurse is licensed.” The Kentucky Nursing Laws (KRS Chapter 314) defines “licensed practical nursing practice,” “registered nursing practice,” “advanced registered nursing practice,” and holds all nurses individually accountable and responsible for their nursing decisions and actions. The Kentucky Board of Nursing (KBN) interprets the statutes governing nursing practice and issues advisory opinions1 as guidelines on what constitutes safe nursing practice. When the performance of a specific act is not definitively addressed in the Kentucky Nursing Laws or in an advisory opinion of the Board, the nurse must exercise professional judgment in determining whether the performance of the act is within the scope of practice for which the nurse is licensed. The KBN has developed a decision tree chart that provides guidelines to nurses in determining whether a selected function is within a nurse’s scope of practice now or in the future. Statutory Definitions and Policy KRS 314.011(10) defines “licensed practical nursing practice” as: …The performance of acts requiring knowledge and skill such as are taught or acquired in approved schools for practical nursing in: a) The observing and caring for the ill, injured, or ...

All nursing facilities participating in Medicaid except intermediate care facilities for the mentally retarded (ICF/MRs) must provide both skilled and intermediate levels of care.http://www.dhhs.state.nc.us/dma/nursingfacility/4.pdf. Level of care is assigned based on the needs of the recipient. In addition to inspections in the licensed only facilities, monitoring surveys in newly licensed facilities are conducted during the first l8 months of operation. The purpose of the monitoring survey is to assist the facility in defining deficient practices that could lead to sanctions and other administrative actions by the Division if they are not corrected. These services must be provided in accordance with the comprehensive assessment and plan of care. For eight consecutive hours, seven days a week, the services of a registered professional nurse must be used. Nurse aide training and competency evaluations are required for nurse aides employed in long-term care. Have in effect a written transfer agreement with one or more participating hospitals providing for the transfer of patients between the hospital and the facility and the interchange of medical and other information; 2. Pharmacy review auditors may look at nursing facility records as part of an audit being conducted on the providing pharmacy. The Board of Nursing, using the general authority of the Nurse Practice Act (NPA) which defines the scope of nursing practice and the responsibilities of the board, promulgated regulations which define the scope of nursing practice and the responsibilities of the board, the scope of practice, educational and other requirements for the recognition of the nurse anesthetist and the nurse practitioner.http://www.ftc.gov/os/comments/healthcarecomments2/carsondoc1.pdf. Since those over 65 consume as much as four times the health care as those under 65, demand for health care will be extraordinarily high just as huge numbers of our approximately 2 million FTE registered nurses—the most experienced ones—are beginning to retire without enough new entrants to the nursing workforce to If present replacement rates persist, “by 2020 there will be approximately the same number of working registered nurses as there are today though demand will soon accel-erate,” says Peter Buerhaus, RN, PhD, Valere Potter Professor and senior associate dean for research at the Vanderbilt University School of Nursing.http://www.rwjf.org/files/publications/other/ChartingNursingFuture0105.pdf. These partnerships demonstrate collabora-tive ways to expand the supply of nurse educators and to recruit and graduate more nursing students. The dearth of nursing school facul-ty is the most pressing shortage issue in nursing education. Facing a 50 percent drop in nursing school enrollments (1993–2001) and a 38 percent vacancy rate in nursing jobs, Georgia officials used the state’s Intellectual Capital Partnership Program monies to expand ten nurs-ing education programs through com-petitive grants to school-employer collaborations ($2.1 million in 2002). Faced with data showing that 3,000 qualified applicants were turned away from nursing programs because of faculty shortages in 1998 and 1999, the Texas State Legislature reapportioned $22 million of its “Dramatic Growth Funds” and reallocated $4 million in income from a tobacco lawsuit settle-ment to bolster the state’s nursing “If an employer can say, ‘I’ve got 50 nursing jobs,’ it makes sense for legislatures to invest in nursing ...
