Hartford, CT, December 8, 2003 -- Thanks to grants from The Travelers Foundation and an anonymous donor, Connecticut Opera is launching a $175,000 challenge campaign for new and increased donations.
The challenge is an indication that important people and corporations in the community value Connecticut Opera for its contribution to the quality of life not only in the Greater Hartford area, but throughout Connecticut and Western New England," says Willie Anthony Waters, General and Artistic Director of Connecticut Opera.
"It's difficult to compete with a soup kitchen for philanthropic dollars," says Waters, "but a strong arts commmunity is what gives Hartford an edge compared to many other similar economically challenged cities.
"Many of these students have never seen a live, classical music performance, let alone an opera," Waters says.

Economic policy and management must be oriented toward the goal of reducing poverty and there must be development of robust markets and institutions; special provision for vulnerable groups; and improved governance to ensure that economic, social, and other gains are sustained.
In the 2 decades prior to adopting the strategy and framework, Asia had experienced high, sustained economic growth rates and lower population pressures, which led to better living conditions and less poverty.
In 2001, ADB approved a $150,000 technical assistance grant to Kazakhstan to prepare an energy strategy that will focus on increasing investment and expanding power supply to the poor and to remote areas of the country.

Opera can be a little intimidating to those who are not familiar with the Italian, French or German languages.
aria (AH-ree-yah) A song for solo voice with instrumental accompaniment; from the Italian word for "air," an aria generally expresses a state of mind rather than propelling the action forward.
mezza voce (MED-zah VOE-chay) Literally, "medium-voice," like a demi-tasse is half a cup, literally; when singing mezza voce, the singer reduces the volume so as to intensify the emotion.
opera buffa A style of opera which revolves almost entirely around comedy; perhaps an outgrowth of the Italian intermezzo, the opera buffa as a form was popular in the baroque days as well as in Italy of the early 19th century.

The BBC Proms has never involved its audience more than it will this year -- not only can audiences have their say on the Proms website and BBC interactive services, but they can actually vote for what they want to hear in part of a Proms concert.
Two of Britain's top opera stars, Rosemary Joshua and John Mark Ainsley, will perform the most popular arias and duets in the concert, which will be broadcast live on BBC Radio 3 and on BBC1 on Sunday 20 July.
In another highlight of this year's Nation's Favourite Prom, Sir David Attenborough narrates a family favourite by one of this season's anniversary composers, Prokofiev's Peter and the Wolf.

Graduate music students in fields other than voice performance may audition before the faculty and must demonstrate a level of singing comparable to a junior voice major.
Faculty will make every effort to make up lessons when students present a valid medical excuse or an excuse acceptable to the performance professor.
Students who wish to graduate in the Undergraduate Honors Program in Voice Performance must also present a full-length recital in the junior year.
Full-length recitals should consist of at least 45, but no more than 60, minutes of music.
Admission to candidacy for the Master of Music in Voice Performance and Literature is confirmed at the first jury examination, usually at the end of the first quarter of residency at Northwestern.

Analysis of the 1999 Healthstyles database was conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to describe characteristics of regular viewers of soap operas, to determine if they learn about health information from the daytime dramas, and to identify actions they take as a result.
Findings reveal that people who report watching soap operas at least twice a week (regular viewers) have more health concerns, and express more negative beliefs and behaviors about prevention practices than non-viewers; they also seek out health information more than non-viewers, but have more difficulty understanding the information they read.

Hitchcock is a semi-automatic video editing system.
This video shows users collaboratively authoring a home video.
There are several commercial systems that allow you to edit video, ranging from professional systems such as Adobe Premiere[1] to those intended for the naïve user, such as Apple's iMovie[2].
Finally, we wanted an easy way for people to share their video clips.
Hitchcock automatically breaks video into short clips containing good video, selects a keyframe to represent each clip, and arranges the keyframes into "piles".
The bottom window represents an ordered timeline where the user can drag clips from the piles and arrange them in the proper order.
