For example, systems of public transfers can enhance efficiency if they allow people to concentrate their limited capacity for social intrigue on the task of production rather than the sharing of risks.
Public income redistribution enables a more refined division of labor in production, which can raise output and economic well-being.
The purpose of the clan is to mitigate income risk, and therefore each clan member belongs to a different team, to prevent paychecks from being subject to undue positive covariation.
One implication of the model is that the introduction of industrialization, with its usage of large production teams, should spur the adoption, through collective choice, of social insurance schemes.

This paper outlines the hardware and sensor systems behind these devices: the electric field sensors of the Gesture Wall and Sensor Chair, the smart piezoelectric touchpads of the Rhythm Tree, the instrumented springs in Harmonic Driving, the pressure-sensitive touch screens of the Melody Easels, and the multimodal Digital Baton, containing a tactile interface, inertial sensors, and precise optical tracker.
Figure 1 shows an overhead view of the Lobby electronics being deployed atop its supporting truss structure, indicating the large physical scale.
Each pad contains a 16-MHz PIC 16C71 microprocessor from Microchip Systems (see http://www.microchip.com/), which monitors the bus, processes data from a piezoelectric (PVDF) sensor strip (Paradiso 1996), and controls the illumination of a large, on-pad LED.

Apart from long-term 'tenants' - the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Opera Australia and the Sydney Theatre Company - the Opera House has largely been a 'hall for hire'.
The most notable of additions to the SOH sonic arsenal is the installation of a Euphonix System 5 into the Opera Theatre.
The System 5 is totally digital, entirely resettable and, to be honest, not the most obvious choice as a new large-scale theatre mixing console.
I met SOH's Sound and AV Coordinator, David Claringbold and Head Production Technician, Steve Le Roux, to learn more of why they chose the System 5 and just how they went about doing the changeover in a punishing opera/ballet schedule.

Seattle---Seattle Opera's general director, Speight Jenkins, officially announced the company's 2004/05 season, its second in the new opera house, Marion Oliver McCaw Hall.
Seattle Opera's performances are led by four of the most exciting and accomplished opera conductors in the world today: the young Israeli Asher Fisch (who led this season's Parsifal), Edoardo Müller and Antonello Allemandi (two of the most accomplished conductors in the Italian repertoire), and the dynamic Croatian Vjekoslav Sutej.
Among those artists returning are soprano Jane Eaglen (who sings her first Ortrud), baritone Greer Grimsley (Telramund), baritone Kim Josephson (Rigoletto---Josephson makes his company debut as Jack Rance in Seattle Opera's upcoming Fanciulla), lyric tenor Lawrence Brownlee (Arcadio), soprano Nancy Gustafson (Florencia), baritone Nathan Gunn (Ríolobo), soprano Carol Vaness (Puccini's Manon), tenor Vinson Cole (Hoffmann), soprano Harolyn Blackwell (Olympia), and bass-baritone John Relyea (the four villains).

The accessibility of opera has increased markedly in the decades since video recorders became available in the home.
As usual with Sellars' stage work, the totality is more effective than its components; less common is elaborate (though fitting) production.
Video is reasonably sharp with good focus and color, but lighting is not augmented so shadows are murky and contrast is excessive.
Sound is very good, resolving the orchestra well (if not specifically to a place in the house) and conveying each detail of the score.
Noisy monaural sound is tolerable at best, but adequate to give an idea of the music.
