It is important to not overlook art education in our schools.
In this lesson, children will create an art project using the Japanese art of origami.
The students will benefit academically by using their visual, listening, and finemotor skills to follow the teacher as they create origami turtles.
Who remembers what type of animal became Mackinac Island in the story The Legend of Mackinac Island that we read today?
Once the origami turtles have been created, have the students use markers, crayons, paints, etc. to decorate their painted turtle.
The child listened and watched quietly while the teacher demonstrated how to make the turtle, may have been a distraction once.

LaFosse has been folding paper with a purpose for 40 years, ever since his Uncle Norman made him a paper airplane when LaFosse was 5.
His creations range from designs so simple that children in early grades can do them to ones so advanced that engineers lose the trail.

OBJECTIVE: Students will learn the story of Sadako Sasaki, some of the effects of an atomic bomb explosion, and be able to locate Hiroshima, Japan on a map.
Students will understand and be able to identify various symbols for peace as well as create a peace bulletin board using these symbols and strands of origami cranes.
Teacher will tell students that there is a true story about the cranes and a girl who lived in Hiroshima, Japan during WWII.
Teacher will then lead a discussion on what the cranes symbolized for Sadako and what the cranes symbolize now.
BEYOND: Students will then be handed one sheet of origami paper and instructions on how to make origami cranes.
