The Government's renewable energy target places a legal liability on wholesale purchasers of electricity to proportionately contribute towards the generation of an additional 9,500GWh of renewable energy by 2010.

Because they are constantly replenished, renewable energy resources have security of supply, unlike fossil fuels which are bartered on the international market and subject to international competition, sometimes even resulting in wars and shortages, and a greater diversity of energy resources is in the best interests of national and international security.
If properly managed, the transition from fossil fuels to renewable energy will not result in net job losses or harm to the economy.
