Seventy-three percent of customers use search engines to find new Web sites.

Was this a helpful exercise in using search engines?

This includes the extensive Web site that I invite you to take a look

Query expansion is a technique, widely used in information retrieval, for obtaining additional terms relevant to a given query (search keywords).

The Web can be thought of as a very large but unstructured database.

Meta tags are what many web designers mistakenly assume are the "secret" to propelling their web pages to the top of the rankings.

How Consumers Use the Internet to Locate Health Information.

These and other studies confirm the power of good search engine ranking.

The next step is to find an extractor definition to retrieve the search results from the page.

Is Search Engine Optimization (SEO) all it's cracked up to be?

As you build your Website, keep your visitor in mind, and make your business profit for years to come.

Every time someone uses a search engine to find something they type in a word or phrase to describe what they are looking for, these words or phrases are called keywords or keyphrases in search engine speak.

A HTML tag tells the internet browser something about the information contained within the tag.

The first step is knowing what the major keywords are for your business and your product or service.

Paid inclusion means websites or URLs pay to be included in a search engineís pool of results available for display, but not to be more prominent.

As documents often have multiple topics, they should not be confined to a single cluster [11]; the clustering algorithm should generate overlapping clusters when appropriate.

Search engines that place greater value on sites that are recently and frequently updated and are highly linked tend to rank blog posts very highly.

There are still options on many sites to submit for free, but with options for paid submission becoming commonplace free submission is becoming increasingly ineffective.

Every business or association a price per thousand "impressions," uses advertising to get the word or number of times the ad will out about its products or services, display during a month.

The two most essential elements of World Wide Web research are Indexes and Search Engines. Search engines are programmed with various lists of words the designers determined to be so general that a search would turn up hundreds of thousands of references. Don't limit your Internet searching to using search engines. Addresses with .org are usually non-profit organizations that are advocacy groups. If you see a high rating, is that because of the soundness of the content or the quality of the design -- or payment to get a higher rating? If you found the site through a search engine, that means only that the site has the words in the topic you are researching prominently placed or used with great frequency.

Although this is a big part of where your traffic will come from, it isn't enough. You also need the search engines to deliver your site to the public you might not otherwise reach. The first step is knowing what the major keywords are for your business and your product or service. The first being a web site author or owner will send in a request to have their site crawled and cataloged. Some search engine spiders look at the keywords and then scan the content of the page to be sure it matches. All search engines consist of three parts: (1) a database of web documents, (2) a search engine operating on that database, and (3) a series of programs that determine how search results are displayed. Because the search engine business is competitive, most search engines also offer additional features that are convenient or fun. Search engine databases consist of copies of web pages and other documents that were made when their crawlers or spiders last visited each site. Do they also have extensive PDF, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and other formats like WordPerfect? Can you OR phrases or just single words? Can you count on consistent results from search to search and from day to day? Can you customize the search or display?

There won't be a sales pitch; everyone at Plain Words is enthusiastic about IT, the Internet and documentation. These search engine tips work for me and other internet marketers of my acquaintance. But it is different for everyone, depending on what your key priorities are, which particular search engines you want to target and who you are trying to attract. They type in one or more keywords and the search engine returns a list of pages related to those keywords. If you use frames, although most (though not all) search engines will index your pages, you have to put the keywords and description meta tags in the frameset page, not just the pages containing the content.

STAMFORD, CT -- April 26, 2002 -- Search engines, portals and communities are the most popular Web domain category in each of the 25 markets measured by Nielsen//NetRatings, the global standard in Internet media and market research, reaching more than 90 percent of the active Internet audience in some countries. The findings, released today as part of Nielsen//NetRatings' Global Internet Index for March, found that well over three quarters of the world's active Internet audience visited search engines, portals and community sites last month (see Table 1). "Search engines, portals and communities have firmly established themselves as the primary starting point on the Web for surfers around the world," said Richard Goosey, chief of measurement science and analysis, Nielsen//NetRatings.

As more businesses, both large and small set up web sites to market their goods and services and acquire new customers, a primary concern of business owners is "getting found" at the places on the internet where the public searches for businesses to serve their needs. Fast search powers the search engine of its better-known partner Lycos (see below) Go/Infoseek: Uses its own spidering technology and its own directory GoTo: Unlike the other major search engines, GoTo is a directory that sells its main listings. The recent addition of GoTo listings at several major portals, including AOL and Lycos, has increased their traffic significantly and has established GoTo as a "major player" in the search engine market space.

Search engine optimisation (SEO) ensures that a website can make good use of search engines as a marketing channel, i.e. that your site features within the first page of returns across the major search engines. For a good ranking on the search engines, it is vital to select key search terms (terms customers use to find sites like yours) and to position them strategically within your site for maximum effect. Specific phrases relating directly to the site content are more likely to rank well and are more likely to convert into sales than more generic phrases. Describe your products well and you will improve general keyword content as well as making the products more attractive to potential customers.

This paper discusses how the Pay-Per-Click/Cost-Per-Click search engine Overture works and how this compares to traditional indexing search engines. Pay-Per-Click (PPC) search engines have always been controversial. PPC search engines can potentially overcome these problems by allowing advertisers to pay (bid against other advertisers) for keywords. For example, when conducting a search at www.altavista.co.uk, the first 2 listed sites are actually the top 2 bids from Overture UK. In their 'Non-Stop Payment Plan', the account will remain online without interruption even if the advertising budget has been depleted. If you are unable to monitor (and alter) your bids at 15-minute intervals, try out Brand-Links Overture Campaign Monitor.

True search engines use software programs called "robots" or "spiders" or "crawlers" to scan the Internet looking for information in the form of words and phrases. For example, you can find a list of all the community colleges in Connecticut by clicking on the "Education" link. On average, Americans experience "search rage" if they don't find what they want within 12 minutes. To locate pages that have references to food safety and fast food type: +food safety +fast food. If you were looking for information about Hillary Clinton, but did not want to find pages that mention Bill Clinton, type the search like this: Hillary Clinton -Bill Clinton.

As disgruntled investors wonder where their startup support dollars have gone, disgruntled web publishers are realising that the development of search engine positioning software and related consultation have chewed up a greater-than-expected chunk. One such web publisher is Sunil Sivarajah, director of startup business portal The Business Lounge, who says he has become very disillusioned with search engines and their procedures, which at times allow deliberate manipulation by websites. This could be done according to popularity, the amount of times the site has been requested, or by continually developing search engine technology to stay ahead of search engine positioning software.

Unlike search engines, Subject Directories are created and maintained by real live people. Go to a major search engine such as Google or Ask Jeeves, or to a specialized database such as PAJobs (with links to online job banks) or lowermybills (for comparing long distance phone rates) A search engine has two parts for creating a database, a spider and an indexer. A Meta Search Engine feeds a single query to several SE's and then combines and organizes all results in a single list. You can search them using the standard keywords, or use plain English phrases! 2. Example of Indexing:: When the phrase is "within quotes" AltaVista prepares its index by searching every word on every page. SE's list hits according to how closely they think the results match the query.

According to a December 2000 survey by Stat Market, search engines only account for 6.86 percent of global referrals while Internet links accounted for 46.13 percent and direct navigation and bookmarks accounted for 47.01 percent. Finding good link partners is just like panning for gold nuggets. Once you publish the Zeus directory to your web site, you'll contact the site owners through the program and let them know that you found their site to be of special interest and have already included their site in your Link Directory. You don't want to create a directory that includes all the knowledge of mankind, it's too big of a project and then you're competing with the search engines at their own game.
