students, recorder, MIDI, digital audio, melody, GarageBand, keyboard, guitar, classroom, accompaniment, arrangement, loop, play, composition.

This project is designed to enable students to enjoy the process of the sequential development of musical literacy through playing an instrument such as the recorder. Classroom music students create their own accompaniments to a melody using GarageBand. They use the GarageBand sound loops, MIDI tracks, and, if they play an instrument like the guitar, they can record their own digital audio tracks. After they complete their accompaniment, students digitally record a track of their recorder performance that is played along with their arrangement. Give each student a copy of Beethoven's "Ode To Joy" melody (from the fourth movement of the 9th Symphony) or another melody with a simple keyboard accompaniment and guitar chords included with the sheet music.

Finding a piece of music in the online Catalogue The Library's music collections are in the Study Hall on Level 3 Finding types of music To find a music score or sheet music published since 1981: check only in the online catalogue. In the online catalogue you can search for music under composer, editor, title or keyword. It is better to keep the initial search simple - you can always add further terms to reduce a large number of titles, or limit it to scores or sound recordings. To use this you need to register at the Enquiry Desk on LEVEL 3.

Within MGN he is responsible for the production of digital scores and parts, primarily in Finale. He encourages the uptake of music notation programmes such as Finale by providing seminars on Finale for Dutch composers, and additional support through plug-ins, libraries, self-made fonts etc. Additionally, MGN regularly organises concerts and educational projects. The organisation also manages an extensive Music Information centre and is a key member of the International Association of Music Information Centres (IAMIC). Their income comes from two sources: 1) selling or renting scores for which they have exclusive rights given by the composers by way of signed contracts 2) income from performances through the national author's rights organisations like BUMA, GEMA etc.

stems, OMI, recognition, correction, durations, music notation, language, glyphs, sta, reference, notehead, interpretation, assignment, pitch.

Glyphs in the foreground communicate with glyphs in the background in order to determine their semantics. For instance, a note would determine its pitch by communicating with the sta underneath it and the clef on top of that sta. The direction of the stem is determined based on the horizontal location of the stem. A number of approaches are then applied to that measure to correct the durations of notes and rests and barline placement. Metric correction works best in scores with many parts, because there is a large amount of information on which to base the corrections. Why did we have to map data? Field formatting important, not just contents Choices heavily influenced by LC practice Can't force institutions to comply with guidelines Sheet music has many alternative titles Creator vs. contributor Plate numbers: they're important, where to put and how to label? Use the authorized form of name where possible. The most recent date to appear on the music, or, the actual date of publication if not present but known. Include other dates (e.g. date of composition) if known. Codes "c" for copyright and "ca." for circa in front of the date is allowed for now.

Levy Collection, optical music recognition, images, digitization, lyrics, metadata, guido, format, AOMR, music notation, feature, algorithm, classification, framework.

An adaptive optical music recognition system is being developed as part of an experiment in creating a comprehensive framework of tools to manage the workflow of largescale digitization projects. This framework will support the path from physical object and/or digitized material into a digital library repository, and offer effective tools for incorporating metadata and perusing the content of the resulting multimedia objects. In Phase One, images of the music and lyrics, and color images of the covers of the Levy Collection were digitized and a database of text index records was created. In Phase Two, an adaptive optical music recognition (AOMR) software (Fujinaga 1997) is used to convert the TIFF image of scanned sheet music into computer readable-formats, which includes GUIDO and MIDI files along with full-text of the lyrics.

This learning opportunity explores music from Canada's past and invites the students to use sound recordings from Library and Archives Canada's Virtual Gramophone site, and view sheet music cover art in Sheet Music from Canada's Past. They will select the materials, artistic media, style and techniques that they judge best reflect the song's theme and artists, as well as its historical and technological context. In completing this project, students will: Demonstrate an understanding of the design process Use knowledge of art media to create artistic works Students will follow the design process in order to create CD cover art for an early twentieth-century Canadian song.
