Tai chi is an ancient Chi nese martial art that is practised throughout the world as an effective exercise for health.

The classes require no special equipment or clothing and once you learn the exercises you can practice them for the rest of your life.

Perform gentle stretching and strengthening exercises to attain flexibility and maintain a feeling of wellness. Taught by yoga instructor Paul Novak, this class centers on Hatha Yoga, but samples other types of yoga including vinyasa/flow, astanga/power, Tibetan and Chinese qigong. As part of the study, you will be assigned by chance, like flipping a coin, to the 50+ Fitness Program run by Madison School & Community Recreation, which was recognized nationally as a Best Practice Site for physical activity for older adults.

In Chen Style Tai Chi, there is both a form for the single sword and double swords. The butt is usually made of metal and can be used to jab into an opponent. It provides a cover for your fingers gripping on the handgrip. Of course it also prevents your hand from slipping onto the blade. For easy and comfortable twisting and swinging of the sword, make sure the slope of the handguard is smooth and not jagged. The handguard featured in the picture on the right is created as a single piece and has the slopes filed into smooth curves.
