Following a study on the incidence of risk factors for falls among seniors in the Montreal region at the end of the 80s, the Montreal Public Health Board set up a program to reduce the risks associated with falls in this population. This report, which focuses mainly on the "balance" component, presents the results obtained when the program was piloted with some thirty seniors in the fall of 1996. Though designed for autonomous seniors who are sufficiently concerned about their balance to attend thrice weekly sessions, the program, despite this intensity, still has its playful side. We used a quasi-experimental evaluation design with an experimental group (n=30) and a control group (n=20).

The three most common causes of falls in the elderly living independently in the community are (1) accidents, (2) poor balance or weakness when walking, and (3) a combination of various conditions affecting the manner of walking, such as arthritis side-effects of medications, alcohol, pain, seizures, and falling from bed. Loera suspected that many of these falls could be prevented through simple home assessments and minor modifications, and that such prevention would reduce the number of elders being hospitalized. Since its inception, the program has helped many Galveston County seniors implement much needed home safety enhancements such as shower grab bars and door widening to enable wheelchair access. A Gulf Coast Senior Care Provider Network Breakfast was held on December 14, 1999 at the Primary Care Pavilion in Galveston.
