nt-vs-unix
This paper presents a brief comparison of two operating systems, Windows NT and UNIX.
First, we compare the main security features of the two operating systems and then we make a comparison of a selection of vulnerabilities most of which we know have been used for making real intrusions.
Two separate but similar mechanisms handle impersonation in UNIX, the so called set-UID, (SUID), and set-GID (SGID) mechanisms.
There are similarities in the security features of the two systems.
A program in this category is the Internet Scanner (IS), which is a commercial version of the well known program Internet Security Scanner (ISS).
unixbas 8. Unix will confirm that the password has been changed.
Passwords must be 6 --- 8 characters long They must contain three types of characters from lower case letters, upper case letters, numerals and symbols.
Most commands take a parameter, such as a file name, one or more flags and/or options.
Flags and options can be case sensitive, e.g. the command ls behaves differently with the -C and -c flags.
Absolute paths may be very long, and thus inconvenient, so you can also specify files relative to your current location in the file system.
Pattern matching is really a feature of the command shell in use, but basic features are common to most shells.

cluster, server, TruCluster Server, applications, Compaq, agents, cluster interconnect, failover, management, Oracle, database, Unix Server-Clustering.
TruCluster Server, Compaq's Unix clustering software for its AlphaServer products, is a highly integrated and comprehensive clustering solution.
Compaq's TruCluster Server software stands out as a single product offering that simultaneously addresses application failover, parallel database support, horizontal application scalability, combined with advanced single-system image features that simplify cluster administration.
There are a large number of availability scripts offered at no extra charge from Compaq for third-party software in the cluster.
When necessary, customers can write their own failover scripts---a relatively easy task because the I/O paths and names do not need to be redefined for a server that will take over for a failed server.

command, UNIX, Computing Service, shell, server, facilities, guide, queue, quota, tower, York, Printing.
Aims of this document This document describes the availability of UNIX facilities at York; it also highlights special facilities which differ from "standard" UNIX.
Other documentation You may also wish to obtain copies of the Introduction to UNIX User Guide which gives a basic, general introduction to UNIX and the UNIX Commands Quick Reference Guide which contains a summary of frequently used commands.
Both are available in the Computing Service together with guides to MicroEMACS, the recommended editor on UNIX and Pine, the recommended mailer.
Conventions used in this guide In examples, THIS TYPEFACE indicates information output by the system, BOLD FACE indicates a command typed by you and italics describe items to be replaced by your own information.
The default shell is the TC-shell (tcsh) which is similar to the standard C-Shell (csh) and provides additional facilities.

For instance, enter % pico letter.dat to create a le called letter.dat.
Besides the spelling checker within pico, there is another Project Vincent spelling checker that you can use by entering: vincent% ispell le Within ispell enter a information.
The nger command can be used at about half of the sites on the internet (including Iowa State) to nd the real name associated with a username on a particular system.
Using the trn Newsreader trn stands for threaded read news.
A full pathname lists the full path in the UNIX hierarchical structure for a le or directory.

As distributed systems become more complex, relying on diverse combinations of Unix, Microsoft Windows NT and Windows 2000 systems, the ability to manage an integrated environment becomes crucial to business success.
What the information systems professional needs is a performance management solution that is easy to use, scalable, and integrated to detect, analyze, report on and help diagnose problems in a mixed environment.
PATROL provides the ability to understand how business applications are performing, to identify and resolve issues quickly, and to optimize performance to cost-effectively meet service-level goals.
PATROL for Unix -- Perform is part of PATROL's integrated performance management solution for distributed systems environments.
elm
folder, elm, Unix, command, folder index, prompt, Information Services, Computing, PINE, print command, deletion, recipient.
Electronic mail (e-mail) is one of the most popular features of a network, allowing you to send and receive typed mail messages, forward and reply to messages, etc. UNIX utilizes a speedy and functional e-mail program is called elm.
** For help with specific UNIX commands, look at the handout "Introduction to UNIX Computing at TAMU."
At the elm folder index (shown in Figure 1), press m to mail a new message.
After you receive an e-mail, you can re-send it to another user by using the forward command.
Since elm is a faster e-mail program than PINE, elm is recommended for UNIX users.

Your timesharing account on Gladstone or Darkwing provides full Internet access at no charge, so you do not need to obtain an "Internet account."
For instance, members of the general public who arrange for an account with a commercial Internet provider may pay a charge in the range of $20/month.
The technology fee you pay each term helps to fund the on-campus portion of the network, UNIX hardware, and licensed products, like the AP and Reuters news wires available via USENET News.
A variety of free microcomputer antivirus programs are included on your Duckware 2001 CD-ROM.
These are also available from the Microcomputer Support Center (151 Grayson Hall; 346-4412) and the Computing Center Documents Room (175 Grayson Hall).

child, Unix, file descriptors, parent, fork, exit, kernel, pid, exec, memory, context, pipes.
int pid = fork(); Create a new process that is a clone of its parent.
file descriptors: most/all interactions with the outside world are through system calls to read/write from file descriptors, with a unified set of syscalls for operating on open descriptors of different types.
· Other descriptors are assigned by syscalls to open/create files, create pipes, or bind to devices or network sockets.
· A common set of syscalls operate on open file descriptors independent of their underlying types.
File descriptors are a special case of kernel object handles.
The child process may execute a different program in its context with a separate exec() system call.

command, filename, Unix, listing, pwd, art, login directory, disk, filenew, lists, dot, disk space.
One of the most important features about Unix is the directory or path structure.
It is given by things like: /usr/people/art In this example, "art" could be either a file or a directory in people.
A single dot (".") means the current directory (you will see the utility of that below).
You can substitute "~" for the complete path of your login directory in any Unix command.
>ls *.txt This command lists all files that end in ".txt">ls t*.txt This lists all files that start with "t" and end in ".txt".
If you type the following, you will get a prompt asking if you really want to remove the file:>rm --i filename Moving or renaming a file>mv filenameold filenamenew This is what you would use to rename a file.
The general thing is the pipe "|".

It will provide you with a basic understanding of the UNIX operating system, its file and directory structure, basic UNIX commands, and how to get on-line help.
This document uses the true type font setting to represent any feedback echoed on the computer screen after you type a command.
The C shell command prompt often includes the name of the computer that you are using and usually ends with a special character, most often the percent sign (%).
A UNIX command line consists of the name of the UNIX command followed by its arguments (options, filenames and/or other expressions) and ends with a RETURN.

installation, oracle, database, scripts, review, UNIX, installation guide, memory, disk, mount, root, environment.
This presentation is based on an Oracle 8.0.6 installation on HP UX, version 10.2 or 11.0.
Reading the Installation Guide is a very important step to having a successful Oracle installation.
Make sure you have enough hardware and memory to run your database adequately.
The installer places one of the above files and the dbhome scripts in the $ORACLE_HOME/bin directory.
Put the following command in the .profile (see guide for C shell or multiple instances).
Startup the database if it's not already started.
You will want to run the "catrep.sql" script, which is created during your installation.
Install Oracle 8 client on your desktop.

unix, command, window, pico, Ctrl, news, moving files, prompt, newsgroups, vacation, unix account, typing.
This course is intended to help UW staff learn the basics of the Unix operating system.
Why Would I Need a Unix account?
Terminals allow multiple users to connect to, and use the Unix computer at the same time.
The more command allows you to browse the contents of a file page by page.
19. Type "ls" to list the files you have saved on your Unix account.
Chances are you already use a mail tool in your office, such as Eudora or Outlook Express, on your PC or Macintosh.
Some Unix machines have a different vacation command.
In Engineering for example, they use the "mkvacation" command.
