Firewalls and Internet Security, Reading, MA: Addison-Wesley.
This book walks through the details of firewalls from a protocol and design perspective.
I have never encountered a book on Unix internals that is written with the system administrator in mind.
The Design of the Unix Operating System, N.J.: Prentice-Hall.
There are two types of programming books of interest to Unix administrators: books on "scripting" system tasks, and books on Unix-specific programming.
For the former task, I use perl almost exclusively with TCL as a graphical interface when required, and recommend that others do the same.

A UNIX filename consists of up to 256 characters, although long filenames should be avoided.
Where you want a command to apply to a number of files, for example you might wish to delete several files, you can call the command (eg rm) and the list all the files.
3.1 Unix commands There is an extensive manual of UNIX commands which is worth consulting to see what is available and how each command works.
Each item on the command line must be separated from its neighbour by at least one space (NOTE that lists of filenames are separated by spaces and not commas).

This installation provides immediate and scheduled virus scanning of the Unix computer.
Installing Sophos Anti-Virus on the Windows NT/2000/XP workstations involves the following five steps: Create a shared directory on the Unix server for the Windows NT/2000/XP Sophos Anti-Virus files (section 4.1).
The procedure is valid for installation on Windows XP Pro workstations, but not on XP Home workstations.
If you have already downloaded and unzipped the Sophos Anti-Virus for Windows 95/98/Me files from the Sophos website, go to step 4.

UNIX is typically used as a textbased operating system and, following the original UNIX philosophy, the commands are often "shortcuts" and include options that have to be remembered.
Another fact that gives many beginners a hard time is that there are often several ways (commands, command sequences) to do something.
The following tutorial is based on the tcsh shell, currently installed on "Helix" (the SUN multiprocessor server) and the examples are given for the user "szoller" with home directory /home/szoller.
We assume that user szoller has successfully logged-in and uploaded the two text files example1 and example2 (check out the other tutorials available on http://hpcc.fmnh.org if you do not know how to do this).

The ability to process audit data sent by remote sources allows for centralized syssyslogd application consolidation of audit data from a variety of platforms, such as routers, firewalls, intrusion detection systems and end systems driven by widespread operating systems.

All network machines with an admi nistrator account should have a password of at least 10 characters.
This program has security holes that have to be fixed (there ar e Microsoft utilities and fixes) and presents yet another way for someone to break into the machines.
UNIX machines should disable unneeded system services, disable generic accounts, install OS patches, uninstall unneeded applications, change permissions on binaries, install TCP wr appers, install Open SSH and use MD5 Authentication.
