Celebrating festivals is a fun way to learn about world culture.. It is filled with many exciting, colorful and traditional activities. These festivities are an enjoyable way to capture the interest of children by their participation in a multi-cultural event through simulation exercises. This cultural simulation of events and situations associated with new understandings of both other groups and of themselves. The unit is school-wide and includes students from Kindergarten to the sixth grade level. The program and its internal events are adaptable for middle school and high school students involved in world cultures. Many more topics that can be introduced for a country study would require longer time. In collaboration with teachers and parents I coordinated the school-wide Chinese New Year Celebration to introduce my China multi-disciplinary unit to the students and the community. I announced a plan for the celebration early in September. Each teacher signed up for one or more of the stage performances or activities/centers, which represent all disciplines. Students with the help of teachers and parents will be responsible for the display, decorations and showing the traditional activities to participants and visitors from the community. Rubrics, assessment, multi-copies of books from school and public libraries will be provided as well as guest speakers from the community, resources from churches, foreign consulates, organizations, and local oriental stores. Participants will shake the holder and get the matching numbered horoscope paper with the number on the tally, and also find out the zodiac animal symbol of their ... The building and property were originally known as Thorne Oaks.http://www.muuf.org/documents/BuildingHistory.pdf. The estate is located on the former site of Brightstowe, the estate of Wheeler Hazard Peckham; the last portion of Brightstowe remains as the basement’s interior south wall. Designed by the renowned architectural firm of Aldrich and Delano1, the current mansion was built in a neo-Georgian style in 1912 by Mr. Willard V.S. Thorne (1865-1920), at the purported pricey sum (for that day) of $400,000. Mr. Thorne purportedly made his initial fortune by standardizing railroad equipment, then maintained it through his railroad-oriented investments. While this may be true, the official record indicates that he graduated from Yale and worked in the engineering department of Great Northern Railway. He then became Vice President of the Pennsylvania Coal Company, Director of Purchasing for the Harriman railroads and a member of the boards of a dozen of the largest transportation companies. The Thorne family had a significant presence in the Central Trust Company of New York, which has since become Chase Manhattan Bank. 1 The firm was known for being “the foremost designers of white-on-red neo-Georgian houses”. The 1957 Daily Record article announcing our purchase of the property notes the (then) current owner as Dr. Peter DeGregorio. We do not know who may have given the ‘Gateways’ name to the mansion. The building has been our home for the past 48 years. While a large portion of the estate, including the carriage house, has been sold off through the years, the remainder of the lower tract is still owned by the Morristown Unitarian Fellowship and is used ... healthier and happier life.http://www.wenwuschool.com/newsletters/NewsLetter_Spring2001.pdf. Nordenskiold calls it “the very first atlas of the New World,” because it was the first to contain a series of separate maps of parts of North and South America. Everywhere in this atlas are indications of Gastaldi’s effort to use the freshest information avail-able. Nordenskiold further notes that through this atlas “copper engraving was reintroduced into the service of cartogra-phy,” as it was the first atlas in the 16th century to use this process. A number of maps were done with copper-engraving in the 15th century, but this technique was abandoned in the ... KEY TO PRICE REVERSAL DAYS: We have found that the reversal of prices occur with regularity on days when two or more planets come within a certain distance of each other as they travel through our solar system. Listed in this box will be those commodities which have responded with regularity to this planetary reversal energy in the past. If your favorite commodity is not listed, this does not mean the aspect does not work for that commodity. The extent to which Energy Days create price reversals is dependent upon several factors. For this reason, no aspect will work in exactly the same way or to the same degree every time. The important point to remember is that both systems can generate energy days and therefore each in its own right is a valuable trading tool. When a planet changes signs there is a potential for price reversals, especially if several planets change signs within a short period of time. In other words, it has no more contact or communication with the other planets until it moves into the next sign. Obviously, we cannot guarantee that the planetary energies will perform in the future with the same regularity that they have ... eo Colston, an elderly man in his sixties, finds an old diary he wrote when he was twelve.http://www.penguinreaders.com/downloads/0582419204.pdf. the diary Leo remembers events which took place in the summer of 1900 when he stayed with Marcus Maudsley, a boy he had met at school. The crisis of confidence and loss of trust in people that Leo suffered as a result of these events were to last throughout his life. The Maudsleys live in a large house in a rich, upper-class world which Leo finds dazzling. Marcus’ sister, Marian is beautiful and she is kind to Leo. As a result Leo will do anything for her, including taking messages to Ted Burgess, a local farmer. When Leo discovers what is in the messages, however, he is horrified. After Marcus tells him that Marian is going to marry Lord Trimingham, Leo tries to refuse to take any more messages. Things come to a tragic end on Leo’s thirteenth birthday, when Marian and Ted’s secret is finally and dramatically discovered. Leslie Poles Hartley was born in 1895 near Peterborough, Cambridgeshire, England, the son of a solicitor who became a director of a brickworks. He was educated at Harrow and Oxford University and was an officer during World War 1 in the Norfolk Regiment. He started writing as a reviewer for various journals in the 1920s and published a collection of horror stories in 1924. His first full length novel was Simonetta Perkins (1925), which was based in Venice where he spent much of his time. But it was with The Shrimp and the Anemone, published in 1944 as the first part of a trilogy about a brother and sister growing up, that he achieved real acclaim. The Moon: Your Natural Day Planner As the heavenly body that moves most quickly, the Moon has always acted as a sort of calendar and natural day planner.http://www.bigskyastrology.com/reports/Moonstruck_sample.pdf. Farmers rely on her phases and her movement through each sign of the zodiac in planting and harvesting their crops. Sailors note her position and her effect on the tides. Astrologers connect the movements of the Moon to the most mundane, domestic, habitual patterns of daily life – the warp and woof of daily existence. The Moon, then, is your natural guide for living in rhythm with the forces of nature. The Moon by Phase The Moon moves through eight phases each month in her journey through the zodiac. This planner simplifies the Moon’s journey by focusing on four of these phases: The New Moon, First Quarter Moon, Full Moon, and Last Quarter Moon. The energy of the waxing Moon (between the New and Full Moons, when the Moon is increasing in light) is one of initiation, action, and forward motion. This is the best half of the month for putting plans into action. During the waning Moon (between the Full and New Moons, when the Moon is decreasing in light), it is more natural to fulfill the intentions of the waxing Moon phases by carrying out those plans and examining their results. The Sun and Moon in Aspect The Sun and Moon, as the major lights of our solar system, represent the masculine and feminine principles in relationship. The Moon makes a complete tour of the Zodiac in about 28-29 days, spending about 2.5 days in each of the twelve signs. The glyph of Mercury and the Wand of Hermes (also called the Hermetic Caduceus) is a polymorphous glyph and as universal a magical symbol as any in the West, because it has a connection to nearly every discipline of Renaissance occultism.http://www.altjn.com/ideas/universal_caduceus.pdf. Let's see how many disciplines we can find that add meaning to or take meaning from this universal sigil. Traditionally the astrological planets were paired up to represent classic polarities that interact to express the vibrancy and fertility of our solar system. Venus and Mars embody the classic gender pair, the forces of attraction and assertion whose dance we echo in our cultural male/female relations. Jupiter and Saturn represent the pair that governs our opportunities and our responsibilities, our freedoms and our bindings. This leaves Mercury out of the pairing process, because this planet is seen, much like this metal, to be of intermediate form and energy. Shape-shifty and indeterminate, the polarity of Mercury depends upon what company it's keeping at the moment, and what aspects it's receiving from the others. Therefore the planet Mercury became the alchemical symbol for the state of androgyny, or as we might describe it in present time, whole-brain functioning. From the wandering performer and diviner, to the association with education, letters and numbers, this godform and planet could be taken as the patron deity of the Tarot. Knowing that he is polymorphous by nature, we should not be surprised that many layers of associations have accumulated around this numinous symbol of consciousness. His route is not the shortest distance between two points: it is a world in itself, ... Lunar Notes is a free monthly e-Newsletter that discusses the cycle of the Moon as well as the symbolism of the New and Full Moon, Eclipses and other significant planetary aspects during the upcoming month.. Because Gemini resides in the 3rd house of the zodiac and is ruled by the planet Mercury, communication, thoughts and learning are most important to Gemini. Intellectual stimulation is as basic as water to a Gemini. There is an inherent need to know and understand just about everything. As we discussed in the last issue, the sign of Aries inhabits the 1st house of the natural zodiac. That first house is the cusp of the Ascendant or as many already knows as the Rising Sign. Because Gemini arrives immediately after the earthy 2nd house Taurus who asks, “What should I possess or own and how will I meet my security issues”? Gemini now desires to communicate and formulate ideas about what those security needs are and present them to others. Gemini resides in the 3rd house of the zodiac and also relates to siblings, the neighborhood, short distance travel and automobiles. In Gemini, the sign of duality, and the 3rd sign of the zodiac you may want to focus on your communication skills, your siblings and neighborhood. The basis of these symbols is derived from the 360 degrees in the zodiacal circle. Since there are 12 signs in the zodiac, that would be 12 signs X 30 degrees = 360 degrees. There are 360 Sabian Symbols and each symbol coincides with and describes each degree of the zodiac. Welcome to the first edition of Lunar Notes! Lunar Notes is a monthly Newsletter which will discuss the cycle of the Moon each month as well as the symbolism of the Moon on that day.. That symbolism might include the use of the Tarot, Astrology, Chakras, Sabian Symbols, Numerology, Animals and/or Fixed Stars or other topics of interest. The Moon is often called a “light” or “luminary”. In astrological circles, she is symbolic of our instinctual emotional nature, how we may or may not have been nurtured as a child and our “perception” our own mother. I call her “she” as the Moon is feminine in nature and linked to the astrological sign of Cancer. The sign of Cancer and the Moon are located in the 4th house of the natural zodiac and are concerned about family (the mother and/or father), children, home and property, food and cooking and our heritage or roots. She is receptive too as she retreats during the day, hidden from view, and absorbs the light of her partner, The Sun, to reflect that light back to us in the evening, once the Sun has disappeared from view. SABIAN SYMBOL’S: For those of you unfamiliar with the Sabian Symbol, the original Sabian Symbols were written in 1931 by Marc Edmond Jones. They were later revised by Dane Rudhyar and others have re-interpreted the symbols periodically. The basis of these symbols is derived from the 360 degrees in the zodiacal circle. Each sign of the zodiac: Aries, Taurus, Gemini and so forth, is comprised of 30 degrees. Since there are 12 signs in the zodiac, that would be 12 signs X 30 degrees = 360 degrees. There are 360 Sabian Symbols and each symbol coincides ... In three separate penitentiaries he was reported to have successfully committed suicide only to arise from the dead after being placed in the morgue.http://www.searchwithin.org/download/magician_of_leavenworth.pdf. He claimed to have attended the universities of Carthage and Oxford and, by profession to be a Haitian Zombi priest. His hypnotic powers were astounding and he could influence guards to hand him their belts for his suicide attempts. He could control seizures of epileptics from a distance and cause the figures of the zodiac to rise in welts on his body. Seemingly, he could escape maximum security precautions whenever he wished. He would simply disappear en route from the back of a paddy wagon and appear again later knocking at the front door of the prison asking for admittance. Hadad's story is doubly valuable since it comes from a conventional psychiatrist with no disposition towards the occult and supernatural. This short account of Hadad, taken from the book, is distinctive because it describes a phenomenal person with powers we know so very little about. Thompson and Red, the guards on solitary row, reported that Hadad was acting up again; there had been nothing in his bucket for a week. I commented that there could not be much from a piece of bread and a gill of water a day. Weird tales surrounded his origin and history, as is always true of these prophets of magic. He claimed to be a Chaldean astrologer with direct lineage reaching back to 400 B.C. He also claimed to have been educated at the universities of Carthage and Oxford, and that by profession he was a Zombi priest from Haiti. Rumor connected him with voodoo rites and devil worship.
