We are currently taking very important steps in the long- term preservation of the Washington Park Zoo. This fact may be surprising given the picture painted by the many critics that say this Board and this City has either not been supportive or that somehow we have neglected the Zoo. It was recognized by this Board that we were heading on a course of a runaway budget. Therefore, in 2001 we formally set forth a plan to provide for the long-term preservation of the Zoo and provide a remedy for the accelerated escalation in the Zoo budget that was taking place. INTAug2002web The Ability Center coordinated the Third Annual ADA Day celebration at the Toledo Zoo. On July 26, fifty-five (55) local, disability-related service providers, vendors and government agencies gathered to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act. Participating organizations confirmed that the greater Toledo community took advantage of the event by stopping at display tables to learn more about disability-related topics and the ADA. This summer 95 children with and without disabilities enjoyed an excellent time at Camp Cricket with cookouts and trips to fun places in the city. The Ability Center recently opened a satellite office in Port Clinton to better serve the residents of Ottawa County. zooClinch Park Zoo, consists of 2.0 acres on the shore of West Grand Traverse Bay close to downtown Traverse City. The field of nutrition in the zoo community is still in its infancy with many an unsolved riddle lying ahead. There are non-monetary costs involved with the internships consisting primarily of time spent by the nutritionist, zoo keepers and zoo management staff in planning and supervision of the intern. For example, in one incident, keepers were having problems convincing the pelicans to eat fish supplemented with thiamine and vitamin E. In addition to eating their "medicine" fish, the animals also had a seasonal problem with bumble foot. Thus, an intern spent several months "encouraging" the animals to eat their supplemented fish and developing management techniques to help lower the incidence of bumble foot. i6847665 http://www.co.dane.wi.us/budget/2003/pdf/adopted/i6847665.pdf zoo, Dane County, Henry Vilas Zoo, Operating, Fund, revenue, GPR support, Budget, Expenditures, species, animals, General Fund, STAFF, Equity, Contractual Services. This article describes issues in the design and marketing of an electronic mobile guide for Artis zoo. Advancements in off-the shelf mobile technology, such as PDAs (Personal Digital Assistants) and design tools have enabled product designers to rapidly create highly customized user applications using dedicated hardware. Leading up to the design of the Artis Electronic Guide were three master thesis gradation projects at Industrial Design, TU Delft. The first project completed by Wolf (2001) focused on comparing different techniques for helping the user navigate through the zoo and led to a working prototype and extensive field tests. The second study completed by Beusmans (2002) considered the design of an educational game for children and resulted in a prototype electronic mobile game that was compared to a paper equivalent.
